EMILY'S List Endorses Inez Tenenbaum for U.S. Senate
WASHINGTON, D.C. - EMILY's List, the largest financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its support for Inez Tenenbaum in her bid to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.
EMILY's List will recommend Tenenbaum to its nationwide network of members, opening the door to tens of thousands of donors eager to make Tenenbaum the first woman from South Carolina elected to the United States Senate.
"Under the leadership of Inez Tenenbaum, the South Carolina school systems have improved at an outstanding rate," said EMILY's List President Ellen R. Malcolm. "Inez has proven ability to find solutions to the problems that face working families. South Carolinians would do well to send Inez to the U.S. Senate."
Tenenbaum was elected State Superintendent of Education in 1998 and again in 2002, receiving more votes statewide than any other candidate on the ballot.
Added Malcolm, "Inez has excited our membership. EMILY's List members can't wait to help send the first woman to the U.S. Senate from South Carolina and will do everything they can to get Inez there."
With almost 73,000 members nationwide, EMILY's List expects to be a considerable fundraising force for Tenenbaum in what is already a high-profile race.
"Receiving the endorsement of EMILY's List is an important achievement for my campaign," said Tenenbaum. "We are running an energetic campaign that is addressing the issues that matter most to the people of South Carolina – improving education, protecting jobs and strengthening the state's economy. I look forward to continuing my strong record of service to South Carolinians as a member of the U.S. Senate."
In its 19-year history, EMILY's List has helped elect seven women governors, 11 women to the United States Senate and 55 women to the U.S. House of Representatives. In the 2002 elections, EMILY's List and its almost 73,000 members contributed nearly $9.7 million to pro-choice Democratic women candidates; members contributed $23 million to fund EMILY's List operations and political program, including the nationwide WOMEN VOTE! project to mobilize women voters on behalf of Democrats.
