EMILY's List Endorses Claire McCaskill for Governor of Missouri

Washington, DC -- EMILY's List, the largest financial resource for women running for elected office, today announced its support for State Auditor Claire McCaskill in her run for governor of Missouri.

As evidenced by her strong performance in the Democratic gubernatorial primary this month, McCaskill's impressive record as state auditor, as a prosecutor, and as a former Missouri state representative has earned her the respect of Missouri voters. As auditor, McCaskill has made state agencies more effective and delivered real, tangible results to the people of Missouri.

"Ever since she was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1982, Claire McCaskill has worked to better the lives of Missourians," said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY's List. "She has been honored for her drive to ensure that taxpayers' dollars are well-spent and for her efforts to crack down on drug offenders. Her background has prepared her to be a highly effective governor, and EMILY's List is excited to support her campaign."

As governor of Missouri, Claire McCaskill will draw on her extensive experience as a policymaker and innovator to bring change to Missouri by focusing on improving education, preventing child abuse, and making government more accountable to the people.

"I am pleased to accept the endorsement of EMILY's List," McCaskill said. "My campaign is for the future of Missouri, and I will do everything I can to ensure that our working families have a government that works as hard as they do."

In its 19-year history, EMILY's List has grown to more than 90,000 members nationwide who have helped elect seven women governors, 11 women to the United States Senate and 56 women to the U.S. House of Representatives. In the 2002 elections, EMILY's List, which then had almost 73,000 members, contributed nearly $9.7 million to pro-choice Democratic women candidates; members contributed $23 million to fund EMILY's List operations and political program, including the nationwide WOMEN VOTE! project to mobilize women voters on behalf of Democrats.
