EMILY'S List Endorses Darlene Hooley for Oregon's 5th Congressional Seat
Four-term Congresswoman brings experience, leadership to reelection campaign
WASHINGTON, D.C. - EMILY's List, the largest financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its support for Rep. Darlene Hooley (D-Ore.) in her bid for reelection to the U.S. House.
EMILY's List will recommend Darlene Hooley to its members nationwide, opening the door to tens of thousands of donors who consider it extremely important to send this hard-working Congresswoman back to Washington for a fifth term.
Rep. Hooley has worked to help stimulate job growth and has been a leader in the House to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which provides funding for special education in schools. As the sponsor of the Identity Theft and Financial Privacy Protection Act, Hooley has taken large steps to protect consumers' credit and has been a fierce advocate for veterans through her position on the U.S. House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
"Hooley has exhibited strong leadership on behalf of Oregonians since she first won this seat in 1996," said EMILY's List President Ellen R. Malcolm. "In her four terms in Congress, Rep. Hooley has been a leader in the fight for quality education, protection for consumers' credit and taking care of our veterans. EMILY's List was right there with Hooley when she won her first race in 1996 and our members are anxious to support her in her reelection bid."
With almost 73,000 members, EMILY's List expects to be a considerable fundraising force for Hooley who has been a strong voice in Congress.
"EMILY's List supported me in my first Congressional race in 1996 and I'm pleased to once again have their endorsement for my reelection bid," said Rep. Hooley. "I've spent the last seven years working for my constituents and all Americans; to ensure that schools have adequate resources for students to learn, that our country's military veterans are provided for, and that personal medical and financial information remains private. I look forward to continuing these efforts in the U.S. Congress."
In its 18-year history, EMILY's List has helped elect seven women governors, 11 women to the United States Senate and 55 women to the U.S. House of Representatives. In the 2002 elections, EMILY's List and its almost 73,000 members contributed nearly $9.7 million to pro-choice Democratic women candidates; members contributed $23 million to fund EMILY's List operations and political program, including the nationwide WOMEN VOTE! project to mobilize women voters on behalf of Democrats.
