Women candidates reach for all-time high in 2008

A recent CQ Politics article noted that the number of women currently serving in the U.S. House of Representatives has tied an all-time high. EMILY's List candidate Jackie Speier won a special election last week, bringing that number back up to the record high of 74. The number of women in the U.S. Senate is also at an historic high, with 16 women senators. According to CQ Politics, “additional gains are possible this year, as there is a sizable list of women who are running competitive bids this year for the House and the Senate.” Many of the races highlighted in the article feature EMILY’s List candidates focused on bringing change to Washington.
