Women in Congress Take a Stand for Women Everywhere
We've been working hard today to elect more Democratic women -- and a look at what our EL women on the Hill did today reminds us why!
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other EMILY's List alums like Rep. Carolyn Maloney, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Rep. Kathy Hochul and Rep. Gwen Moore held a press conference today, in the midst of tense deficit reduction negotiations between both parties, to call attention to the risks cuts to entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare pose to women. Leader Pelosi pointed out that they uniquely understand the dangers of cutting these programs, saying "We know it because we are women and caregivers and we know it because of the people we represent. We know it because of the special interest we have taken in this bedrock of security for women and families in our country."
Many of the proposed cuts will harm some of the most vulnerable populations, including women, their families, low-income earners and senior citizens, who disproportionately rely on entitlement programs. Standing firm and united, these women called for a deficit reduction agreement that strengthens Social Security and Medicare and is mindful of the needs of women and other at-risk groups that have largely been left out of the discussions.
Seeing strong, progressive women up there standing up for American women everywhere in this capacity is exactly why EMILY's List fights every single day to get more and more Democratic women into office. Keep up the good work ladies!
