Virginia Foxx and the “Let Women Die” Act

During yesterday’s discussion of HR 358 US Representative Virginia Foxx from North Carolina’s 5th congressional district made the claim that "nobody has fought more for the rights of women" than her.

In fact, Fox has tried to amend a spending bill by cutting funding for breast-feeding support funds, sponsored a bill repealing the Prevention and Public Health Fund which assists communities in preventing illnesses, and co-sponsored a bill that would have outlawed abortions, and many forms of contraception including emergency contraception like the Plan B pill. She has voted against making tobacco companies follow health guidelines, against funding accessible healthcare for women, and against lowering the cost of college on families. This is in addition to supporting a bill just yesterday that would let women die rather than perform an emergency abortion.

In honor of Fox’s shocking statement we wish to highlight the wonderful work done by the wonderful women candidates that EMILY’s List has endorsed, who do in fact fight for the rights of women:

Champions like Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, candidate for Senate in Wisconsin, who was a House sponsor for the FREED Act addressing eating disorders and treatment. Or former Congresswoman Dina Titus, running again for her old seat in Nevada’s 3rd congressional district, who cosponsored a bill increasing family planning services and a bill to make Pell grants a higher priority. Christie Vilsack, running in Iowa’s 4th congressional district, was the Executive Director of the Iowa Initiative, whose mission is to reduce the rate of unintended teen pregnancies among Iowa women.

It is unacceptable for Foxx to refer to herself as a fighter for women’s rights when she has systematically and constantly tried to limit them. Instead we chose to honor the strong EMILY’s List women who have worked hard to do what is in the best interest of women and families.

Donate to EMILY’s List today, to show Virginia Foxx and the GOP that you know who the real heroes are and you are willing to help them continue to work for their constituents!
