We Recommend Val Demings for Congress

I’ve been hearing about Val Demings for weeks now. A strong community leader, Val is the embodiment of the American Dream. Through hard work and perseverance she worked her way from a beat cop to serving as Chief of Police for Orlando. Val might be tenacious and no-nonsense, but she’s also a mom who has seen the dream she achieved be cut short for young people today. Val knows that with a stronger America, we have a brighter future, and that’s why she’s running for Congress.

The youngest of seven children, Val Demings was raised to believe she could achieve anything if she put her mind to it. After graduating from Jacksonville’s public schools, she received a B.S. in Criminology from Florida State University and a Masters degree in Public Administration from Webster University. She spent her early career as a Social Worker focused on foster care, and then joined the police force in Orlando.

Listen to Val Demings talk about her reasons for running for Congress

Val was the first woman to be appointed as Chief of Police and served the office honorably and efficiently reducing violent crime 40 percent while under her tenure. She also served as the Bureau Commander for Patrol Services, and was responsible for over 300 sworn and civilian personnel. In addition to her regular job assignments, she served 12 years on the Crisis Negotiation Team, Commander of the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team, and Executive Vice President of the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police. She also completed the Southern Police Institute Command Officer's Development Course and is a graduate of the 226th Session of the FBI National Academy

EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said about the race

"Since taking office, Daniel Webster has consistently pushed a turn-back-the-clock agenda on women’s rights. Val Demings, a tough progressive candidate, is just the woman to stand up for Florida’s women and families and represent their interests in Congress. She has been a dedicated public servant, a pioneer for women in law enforcement and was a trailblazer in overseeing crime reduction during her tenure as police chief. This race is no doubt going to be extremely competitive, but Val is no stranger to overcoming obstacles. We are proud to announce our endorsement of Val Demings, and look forward to adding another strong pro-choice Democratic woman to the House."

We’re excited to announce Val Demings is a recommended candidate and we encourage you to support her campaign for Congress TODAY!
