The Virginia Old Boys Network – in Vermont?

I live in Virginia, and one of my great frustrations is our Republican Governor, Bob McDonnell. Now I see him raising big money for Vermont’s Republican candidate for Governor Brian Dubie – and it makes me more sure than ever that EMILY’s List-endorsed Deb Markowitz needs our support, in order to ensure that Bob McDonnell’s radical, throw-back views don’t have a willing audience in the Governor’s mansion in Montpelier.

Bob McDonnell is a bottomless well of loony beliefs and bad choices. He has described working women as "detrimental" to families. He once wrote that it is "illogical" for birth control to be legal for unmarried couples and he condemned the "purging" of religions from our schools. In his masters thesis he criticized federal tax credits for child care because they encouraged women to enter the workforce. After his election as governor, McDonnell is best known for saying slavery was not "significant" enough to be included in a proclamation supporting Confederate History Month. He appointed Fred Malek the chair of his Government Reform Commission. Who's Fred Malek, you ask? Where to start: Fred Malek is a former Nixon aide who compiled a list of Jews in the administration for the president (the "last recorded act of official anti-Semitism by the United States government," said Slate magazine). He's a political advisor to Sarah Palin. And he's the leader of the American Action Network, a right-wing group that expects to spend $25 million this cycle to try to take back the House and Senate and promote policies that would hurt women and families. He leads American Action Network with former Virginia Governor George Allen -- you remember, the one who called a staff member from a rival campaign a racial slur?

There are a lot of things about Virginia to love -- the farms, the beautiful mountains, the history of the place. But this kind of Bob McDonnell -- Fred Malek -- George Allen old-boys club isn’t one of them. Ask Brian Dubie if he shares Bob McDonnell’s views. And let Secretary of State Deb Markowitz -- a voice of reason and competence -- know that we’re behind her every step of the way.
