Straight Talk: Keep Family Planning Accessible to All Women, Not Just Some.

Where I come from, in Butte, Montana, we don’t mince words. So I’m going to be straight up here: there is nothing more common sense than making sure all women have access to the full range of health care, including birth control, and nothing more contrary to our American spirit than putting a thumb on the scale and tipping it in favor of some folks, at the expense of others.

Paid family leave and affordable child care have long been inadequate in this country, and the constraints of the recession are making them even more so. Read more about what the situation is like for parents these days and what our Democratic women leaders are going to do about it.

Veteran's Day: A time to honor those who serve

Veteran's Day is a celebration to honor America's 23 million veterans for their patriotism and willigness to serve their country. As we celebrate this Veterans Day, we remember one of the best ways to honor our men and women in uniform is to help them when they come home. We’re grateful for the EMILY’s List elected officials who are leading the way.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection, because early detection-as with any cancer- plays a huge role in increasing ones chance of survival. One in eight women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetimes, a ratio that has been on the rise over the past few decades.

Having Mazie Hirono’s Back because the GOP Has Lingle’s

The GOP loves Linda Lingle. That much has been made clear ever since she jumped into the U.S. Senate race in Hawai’i earlier this week. But we have a great progressive, Mazie Hirono, serving her third term in Congress. She’s a champion of issues concerning women, families, energy and the environment who is ready to take her commitment to the U.S. Senate.

Four seats. That’s all that Republicans need to win to take back the US Senate. In the era of the Tea Party that means more legislation cutting women’s health care, more restrictions on women’s reproductive rights, more cuts to educational programs for kids, and more strain on middle class families in the recession. Now more than ever, Democrats across the country must pull together and support our senate candidates.

Suzanne Bonamici: "I don't just see statistics and the unemployment rate. I see the faces of Oregonians struggling to get by. The same people I've spent my life fighting for. We have to put people back to work, and help small business survive and grow. And keep our promise to seniors on the Social Security and Medicare they earned, instead of tax breaks for oil companies and the wealthiest. In Congress, I'll stand up for you - every day!"

Mazie Hirono: A first of many firsts

The U.S. Senate race in Hawaii presents a great opportunity to move one of our own progressive leaders up the pipeline. EMILY’s List own Congresswoman Mazie Hirono is running to replace retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka, and her race will be crucial to protecting our Democratic majority in the Senate. If elected, Mazie would stand as the first woman to represent Hawaii in the Senate, the first Asian-American woman elected to the Senate, and only the second woman of color to serve in the chamber. Her election and her progressive voice on the Senate floor would be monumental. Mazie will not only help defend the kind of policies Sen. Akaka stood for, but she can expand on the great work she has done in the House.

The special election primary in Oregon’s heavily Democratic 1st district is right around the corner, and we have an opportunity to help a candidate with a proven track record of standing for working families. Suzanne Bonamici spent several years fighting on behalf of middle class as a consumer protection attorney. In times with big banks scamming people who just want to achieve the American Dream, we need someone in Congress who will put families first.

Congratulations to Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake for her victory last night. After serving as Mayor for the last 20 months, Baltimore voters know what we’ve known all along: Having a qualified and compassionate leader makes a difference. Baltimore faces many challenges including a high crime rate, the same economic problems most American cities are facing, and let’s not forget hurricane Irene. With a full term Mayor Rawlings-Blake can begin to work through these issues and more.

The GOP will go after Tammy with everything in their arsenal, using unlimited corporate donations to blanket Wisconsin's airwaves with vicious personal attacks. Former Congressman and right-wing extremist Mark Neumann is already in the race for this open seat, and former governor and George W. Bush cabinet member, Tommy Thompson, is poised to run.

Hirono Needs Us for the Primary and General

In 2006 EMILY's List worked to get Rep. Mazie Hirono elected to Congress from Hawai'i. Six years later, we have the chance to help her again. Mazie is running for U.S. Senate and our community is going to do everything we can to get her there. Races like this are the reason that EMILY's List was founded 26 years ago, and our members’ support is what’s made us successful in electing women like her up and down the ballot. You all know there are only 17 women in the Senate chamber. And you all know that’s far too small a number. So let’s help add to the ranks of Senate women – and elect an outstanding Democrat in the process.

Revving up for Bev – EMILY’s List backing Perdue in 2012

By Beth Davidson on 07/29/2011 @ 11:00 AM

Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue dismissed the naysayers and made history in 2008, becoming the Tarheel State’s first woman governor—and EMILY’s List members were behind her all the way. In just two years, Bev has expanded health insurance coverage to thousands of North Carolina children—and, in a pledge to become the “jobs governor,” has helped to bring jobs to the state in the midst of an economic downturn. Under her watch, North Carolina became the third “Best State for Business” in Forbes’ annual ranking. And earlier this month, she courageously vetoed a GOP budget that [barred public funds from supporting Planned Parenthood, and] reduced the state’s sales tax at a steep cost to education. [While Republicans last week mustered the votes to override her veto, polls indicate that voters side with Bev.]

It's easy to forget what Memorial Day is actually about: remembering and honoring those who have died serving our nation. During this time of remembrance, we here at EMILY's List want to take a moment to, in the words of Abigail Adams, remember the ladies.
