Last year, I sat in my Washington office and listened to five women tell painful stories of how they had been sexually assaulted while in uniform. Each one of them had been a committed professional, each one had dreamed of a career in the military, each one had dedicated their life to serving our country. Each one was not only the victim of an assault, but also a victim of a very flawed system for responding to these attacks.

Equal Pay Day 2012

Today is Equal Pay Day. The sad fact is, in 2012, American women still earn only 77 cents on average for every dollar men make. This terrible wage gap has dire consequences for not only women, but for their families as well.

Gridlock in Congress is gonna be no match for NY’s Grace Meng, one of EMILY’s List most recent endorsed candidates. Just today, Meng achieved the nearly impossible – bringing four, count ‘em, four likely candidates for Mayor in New York City together to agree on one critical thing: Grace Meng.

Kathy Hochul's spectacular win in last May's special election was truly one for the books: a Republican congressman resigned in disgrace in a seemingly safe district, but Kathy grabbed the seat in an upset that reinvigorated Democrats and stunned the GOP. Perhaps someone else might have rested on her laurels after such an accomplishment, but Kathy Hochul did no such thing.

Louise Slaughter is exactly the kind of fighter and reformer we need in Congress -- and she's shown it in her 25 year House career. She's been a champion for women's rights and consumers, and now she's been drawn into a competitive district. Louise needs our support right away, or else we risk losing one of the leading women in Congress.

It’s 2012, and women are still making $0.77 for every $1 a man makes in the same job. And Scott Walker just made that wage gap easier to maintain and harder to prosecute.

Last week, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced the Rebuild America Act which would expand opportunities and economic growth for women and families. The Rebuild America Act would improve economic security for women and families and provide Americans with the jobs and opportunities they need. The Act, praised by the National Partnership for Women and Families as “an ambitious, comprehensive bill that addresses the real issues facing America’s families,” covers many issues that EMILY’s List women have been fighting for throughout their careers.

New York Assemblywoman Grace Meng of Queens has an impressive list of superlatives already under her belt: she’s the only Asian-American currently serving in the New York State Legislature, as well as the youngest Asian-American ever elected there. She is the first Asian-American appointed to hold a cabinet position in her state’s Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Caucus. If elected, Grace will be the first Asian-American to serve New York in Congress.

There’s a war being waged on the women of this country. If you've picked up the newspaper, turned on the news, or visited this blog recently, you know the right-wing is waging a war on women. The extreme conservatives would rather debate reproductive freedom, women's health, or even topics like birth control that have been decided for decades, instead of talking about the issue on everyone's minds -- jobs And while the intensity of these renewed attacks may be unprecedented, sadly the overall assault is nothing new.

Today is the 2-year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act. With all the legislation flying around the states aimed at vaginally probing women, restricting their access to comprehensive health care and dictating what they can and cannot do to their bodies, I’m happy to celebrate a piece of legislation that has done so much to actually help women.

The Right Wing decided it wanted to play Monday Morning Quarterback with my lady parts this year. It seems like an odd choice for a recreational activity, especially since there’s no legislative or medical reason to suddenly introduce radically restrictive and dangerous legislation on women’s health and bodies. Maybe someone should introduce them to Pinterest instead.
