Speaker Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell each announced their three picks for the all-powerful, debt slashing “Super Committee” this morning. And, in a shocking ode to the party’s history, they chose… I hope you’re sitting down for this… six white males. Lost my socks there.

Mikulski started organizing casual events where the women could get together with "no staff, no memos, no leaks and no men"several years ago, in cooperation with her colleague (and fellow EMILY's List candidate) Sen. Claire McCaskill. Through their meetings and friendships, they have cultivated a space where the women of the Senate feel comfortable debating issues despite difference of opinion. They may not always agree on the policy choices, but their respect for a civil political discourse manifests on the Senate floor and even on the Sunday shows.

Earlier this week, our four West Coast senators did what they do best -- stand up for their home states. This powerful foursome consists of Senators Barbara Boxer (CA), and Patty Murray (WA), who both recently won re-election with the help of EMILY's List members as well as Maria Cantwell (WA), and Dianne Feinstein (CA), who are both up for re-election this cycle. Banded together with the two Democratic senators from Oregon, they're fighting offshore drilling on the Pacific Coast. They'll do to what it takes to protect the natural resources and jobs that are crucial to their constituents.

In case you missed it last night, our own Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand dropped by Jon Stewart's The Daily Show. Stewart was a great ally to Sen. Gillibrand in helping to use his voice to move the 9/11 Health Bill forward. In the segment, Sen. Gillibrand gets a chance to thank Jon for his role, as she recognizes the role that all of us have in our democracy: speaking up.

Senator Barbara Mikulski is known amongst her colleagues as the "Dean" of Senate women. She was the first Democratic woman elected to the U.S. Senate in her own right – her groundbreaking campaign was our first, the inspiration for EMILY's List back in 1985. The EMILY's List community has stood with Sen. Mikulski for over two decades. She has fought for us time and time again -- and we've done the same for her, most recently supporting her successful reelection this past November.

Some may say that the Senate moves at a sloth's pace, and while it was never a legislative cheetah, it hasn't always been like this. The filibuster is not a product of grand legislative tradition -- it's a twisted vestige of a gentleman's agreement first used in opposition to the Civil Rights Act.

Yesterday, President Obama signed a repeal of the discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy -- and in the coming months our men and women in uniform will be able to serve openly regardless of their sexual orientation. Our women in Congress have written letters, op-eds, and delivered dozens of speeches on the chambers’ floors to bring about this critical change.

Just moments ago, the Senate passed the 9/11 Health Bill at the urging of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand -- delivering for our first responders, our nation's heroes, the proper medical care they deserve. This bill has been a legislative priority for Sen. Gillibrand for many months -- she has fought hard to bring this issue to the forefront and continued to hold Republicans attempting to block the legislation accountable.

We all owe a tip of the hat to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. A tireless advocate, she’s on an incredible winning streak of late. Kirsten continues to force critical issues to the forefront of our national debate. While other senators, in particular tea party favorite Jim DeMint, have been more focused on political grandstanding and calling working for their constituents in late December “sacrilegious,” Gillibrand has stayed focused on getting things done for American families.

There is overwhelming evidence that women make less money than men simply because of their gender. But today, Republican members of the Senate once again chose to block the common-sense Paycheck Fairness Act, rather than work across party lines to stand in support of women and equality.
