Speaker Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell each announced their three picks for the all-powerful, debt slashing “Super Committee” this morning. And, in a shocking ode to the party’s history, they chose… I hope you’re sitting down for this… six white males. Lost my socks there.

I’m asking you to join EMILY’s List today in “Standing Up to Serve,” an initiative meant to sound the call for public service and to give you direct ways to answer it. My achievements have been possible thanks to women helping me along the way, and I will continue to do all that I can to lift up other women.

It was only two days ago that John Boehner took possession of a strangely over-sized Speaker's gavel, and already House Republicans seem to be flailing. With so much ineptitude and backsliding in just one week in power, we decided to break in down and give you the highlights (lowlights?) of this week in GOP failure.

House Republicans are champing at the bit in anticipation of their scheduled vote to repeal last year's historic health care reforms. They've made clear their indifference to the millions of American who lack insurance, which often drives them into debt or wreaks havoc with their health. But, to use the old saying, isn't what's good for the goose good for the gander? If the GOP finds so-called "government-sponsored" health care so repellant, then wouldn't they be first in line to reject such a heinous thing for themselves?

Remember the bad old times of now convicted felon and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay? If you’ve tried to scrub “The Hammer” and his special brand of corrupt cronyism from your memory, then sorry to break it to you: they’re back! “They,” specifically, are the former staffers and associates of DeLay, who’ll be roaming the halls of Congress again.

Only hours into 2011 and our dedicated community is working to make sure that this new year gets off to a strong start. There are a lot of exciting, and yes challenging, tasks that lay ahead of us. We're going to be putting our resources to good work in the coming year to recruit and train pro-choice Democratic women -- to grow our ranks at every level. As we forge the path ahead, join us in reflecting on some of the great achievements our women delivered in the past year.

Yesterday, President Obama signed a repeal of the discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy -- and in the coming months our men and women in uniform will be able to serve openly regardless of their sexual orientation. Our women in Congress have written letters, op-eds, and delivered dozens of speeches on the chambers’ floors to bring about this critical change.

This morning, the Republican Caucus ratified what we've all feared: the freezing out of America's women. Taking yet another play from their out-dated handbook, Boehner's Boys have hand-picked the leaders of powerful committees like Appropriations, Energy & Commerce, Transportation & Infrastructure, and Ways & Means. Their choices to lead? An overwhelming majority of men.

It was nearly 40 years ago that the late Cong. Patsy Mink of Hawaii authored Title IX, ending years of gender bias in education by funding and paving the way for my generation of women to excel in and out of the classroom. While the bill's language is not specific to athletics programs, many battles for gender equity in school sports have been won, thanks to Title IX.

How can the GOP reconcile the reality of a net loss of women in leadership with their lofty proclamations of "the year of the woman"? The short answer? They can't. The "Young Guns" danced around the question instead of actually addressing the concern.

No exaggeration or hyperbole is needed to discuss a recent incident with our Speaker-designate John Boehner -- the facts of the matter are simply appalling and shocking enough in and of themselves. And these are the facts: Randall Terry, an extreme anti-choice activist and founder of the fringe group Operation Rescue, met with Boehner’s chief of staff and delivered this demand, later forwarded to Terry’s supporters via email: “When the Republicans are in power, pro-life groups and leaders become way too ‘polite.’ We lose our edge; we don’t hold them accountable… We have Pro-Life DEMANDS for Mr. Boehner & House GOP… We Must Play Hard Ball: They Must Fear Pro-Lifers!”

Sorry folks – no pity party to see here. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in a recent interview with Deborah Solomon of The New York Times, evaluates recent events with her typical frankness. After the midterm losses, Solomon asks Pelosi, why not just step down from leadership? “Well, don’t forget that I led the party into the strong victories of ’06 and ’08. And now we are prepared to win again.”
