Gabby, we thank you for letting EMILY's List walk with you every step of the way. In big cities and in small towns throughout this country, hundreds of thousands of EMILY’s List members have been inspired by you, and felt, in ways large and small, a part of your efforts to make this country better and of your many, many victories.

My work at EMILY’s List means I get to travel. A lot. I have become a world class packer. I can remove my cowboy boots at the security line in under 5 seconds. That sign in the airport with the picture of the “expert traveler”? That’s me.

Where I come from, in Butte, Montana, we don’t mince words. So I’m going to be straight up here: there is nothing more common sense than making sure all women have access to the full range of health care, including birth control, and nothing more contrary to our American spirit than putting a thumb on the scale and tipping it in favor of some folks, at the expense of others.

Gabby Giffords Mark Kelly

"Tough, Tough, Tough"

By Stephanie Schriock on 11/15/2011 @ 11:15 AM

Last night as I watched the extraordinary story of Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly, there were moments when my eyes filled up. Seeing those pictures of Gabby looking weak in the first weeks after the shooting and watching her struggle is hard. But there were more moments when my fist was up in the air, cheering along with every victory and every milestone and every moment when Gabby's spirit and her big, strong heart reminded me of the woman she is. And then I realized that unconsciously, I was mimicking Gabby -- that unstoppable determination, the glee she takes in a job well done, expressed by that jaunty arm flung out into the world around her like punctuation.

Big Endorsement in Tight Indy Mayor Race

As you heard from Amy in her post from the campaign trail in California, there’s nothing as exciting as the last few days of a campaign. As a campaign manager you’re keeping your eyes on so much – especially those critical endorsements that help folks make up their mind and get to the polls. So I’m so excited for EL candidate Melina Kennedy, who was endorsed by the Indy Star in her campaign for Indianapolis Mayor. It’s the kind of endorsement that makes campaign managers holler and give high fives all around, because it sings Melina’s praises, but also reminds people why this election matters so much for them:

20 years ago today, Anita Hill's testimony in front of an all-male Judiciary Committee riveted women across the nation -- and galvanized them to action. Senator Barbara Mikulski, the first Democratic woman elected to the Senate in her own right, recalled repeatedly being asked why there weren't more women on the dais. "There are only two of us!" she'd answer. Women were furious -- and rightly so.

"Pass the bill" and put folks back to work!

That’s the kind of plain language and clear vision I like, which was why I was excited by President Obama’s jobs speech last night. Women and their families, ALL Americans, will benefit hugely from what the President’s proposing. Women and men in our country need jobs and job security. I was just out in Montana last week talking to folks in my hometown of Butte, an old mining town that is trying to find ways every day to bring in new jobs. There are people hurting out there right now. I have friends who may have a job, or two, but are still struggling to make ends meet and worried about losing the work they have. Too many of our fellow citizens don’t have a job at all and haven’t been able to find one for months or years.

The GOP will go after Tammy with everything in their arsenal, using unlimited corporate donations to blanket Wisconsin's airwaves with vicious personal attacks. Former Congressman and right-wing extremist Mark Neumann is already in the race for this open seat, and former governor and George W. Bush cabinet member, Tommy Thompson, is poised to run.

Their victories are your victories. Your support for Wisconsin WOMEN VOTE! allowed us to get ads up on the air and put Team EMILY volunteers on the ground. Thousands of you gave $25, $50, $100, and when we put your individual contributions together, we were able to do incredible things.

Today, Wisconsin voters will go to the polls and cast their ballots in the largest recall election in the state’s history. So much is at stake, and we are proud of the hard work of our members, men and women alike, who spent countless hours volunteering both on the ground and on the phones, educating people about the impact of Governor Scott Walker’s reckless agenda on labor, on women, and on the working families of Wisconsin.

Last night, we got to see the American spirit at its absolute best. Gabrielle Giffords arrived in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives to a standing ovation from colleagues on both sides of the aisle. She walked in beaming, without help, and she cast her vote. She said she was happy to get back to work.

American women need champions in Congress right now. We need to know there are Democratic women who have our backs, because the GOP is doing everything it can to take away our access to health care, our ability to plan and care for a family, and our opportunities to make successful, safe, and healthy lives for ourselves and our families.

Your words of support for Gabby and her family, your heartbreak over the scope of the tragedy, your sense of belonging to a powerful community of fellow EMILY's List members.

It is with a heavy heart that I write about the senseless violence in Tucson today, where a gunman attacked Cong. Gabby Giffords, her staff, and constituents at a public event. As I write, we know that at least one member of Congresswoman Giffords' staff, as well as a young child and other bystanders, were killed in the cold-blooded attack, and Congresswoman Giffords is fighting for her life, following a bullet entering her brain at close range.
