POP Has Trained 565 People this Year!

Tags: POP, Why women

Check out all the great photos from our recent Political Opportunity Program trainings in Oakland, Orlando, and Atlanta. The program, established in 2001, travels the country setting up trainings at the state and local level, encouraging and recruiting women to run for office, work in office, work on campaigns—to get out there and be involved. This cycle, thanks to the efforts of our phenomenal POP team, 565 people received training. 565 women now have the knowledge, skills, confidence and support to one day run for office.

Spending time with Kamala Harris in California

Monday, I told you about my trip to California to meet with San Francisco District Attorney candidate Sharmin Bock – but Sunday I also met with her predecessor (and EMILY's List alum) Kamala Harris, who is now California’s Attorney General. She is not only the first African American to be elected to the AG office, but she was also the first woman to be elected Attorney General in California history.

Big Endorsement in Tight Indy Mayor Race

By Stephanie Schriock on 10/31/2011 @ 05:30 PM

As you heard from Amy in her post from the campaign trail in California, there’s nothing as exciting as the last few days of a campaign. As a campaign manager you’re keeping your eyes on so much – especially those critical endorsements that help folks make up their mind and get to the polls. So I’m so excited for EL candidate Melina Kennedy, who was endorsed by the Indy Star in her campaign for Indianapolis Mayor. It’s the kind of endorsement that makes campaign managers holler and give high fives all around, because it sings Melina’s praises, but also reminds people why this election matters so much for them:

I was able to attend an event for Sharmin Bock’s campaign for San Francisco District Attorney, and when I arrived on Chestnut Street on Saturday afternoon she welcomed me open arms. We talked briefly about how things are progressing and how close the race is. She’s up on television with an ad about her experience as a prosecutor, and her success rate putting criminals behind bars. The more we can tell San Francisco about Sharmin, the more people see she’s the best choice.

Congratulations to Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake for her victory last night. After serving as Mayor for the last 20 months, Baltimore voters know what we’ve known all along: Having a qualified and compassionate leader makes a difference. Baltimore faces many challenges including a high crime rate, the same economic problems most American cities are facing, and let’s not forget hurricane Irene. With a full term Mayor Rawlings-Blake can begin to work through these issues and more.

Last week, I had the opportunity to join the delegation of EMILY’s List staff at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials’ (NALEO) 28th Annual Conference in gorgeous San Antonio. My takeaway? Incredible enthusiasm from Latina elected officials and great potential for us to continue working with this community.

Jessica Lappin, a courageous leader on the New York City Council, sponsored the bill to ensure that these so-called crisis pregnancy centers correctly identify themselves, ending their dangerous deception that threatens women’s ability to make informed health decisions. Yesterday this bill aimed at protecting women overwhelmingly passed by a vote of 39 to 9, with 1 abstention.

Today, Council Member Jessica Lappin rights a wrong. Later this afternoon the New York City Council will vote on an important measure that addresses the problem of crisis pregnancy centers - places masquerading as health care providers but are instead efforts to derail women from making their own choices, by providing them with biased and inaccurate information.

EMILY's List Political Opportunity Program (POP) goes into this cycle growing its mission to seek out and support local pro-choice Democratic women to run strong viable, winning races and building the pipeline. This means an increase in the number of trainings, training locations, and strategically getting involved in a larger variety of local races. To that end, I've been working with some exciting city-wide and aldermanic campaigns in Illinoir -- races where EMILY’s List, for the first time, has endorsed women.

As my colleagues know all too well (they have the patience of saints), I’m a proud Californian. I was even prouder than usual when, back in my home state for Thanksgiving weekend, I heard that Kamala Harris was declared California’s next attorney general. Kamala was an EMILY’s List POP candidate, and she is the first woman – and person of color – to be California’s top attorney.

As we get closer and closer to November 2nd, hit websites, splash pages and attack ads are flooding the news. It's not often that one makes me stop, stare and yes, like I was in a cartoon, actually drop my jaw. Enter stage right -- way, way right -- Illinois Governor candidate, Republican Bill Brady.

Hudgens to Georgia women: no mammograms for you!

Georgia insurance commissioner candidate Ralph Hudgens sure is a peach. He's taken the brave position of opposing nearly every preventative medical procedure that helps save women's lives, like Pap smears and mammograms, not to mention maternity coverage and breast reconstruction for cancer survivors. In fact, he doesn't just oppose these measures: he actually sponsored a bill to end the law that mandates coverage of mammograms. Unless we help elect EMILY's List candidate Mary Squires, Georgia women will be faced with this man as their insurance commissioner -- and he certainly won't be working on their behalf.

Primary day in New York state is just six days away and with a huge number of voters still undecided, EMILY's List candidate and Nassau County DA Kathleen Rice is running a tough, energized campaign. Last night, the four male candidates and Kathleen met for their first debate, and voters got to know Kathleen a little better – hearing about her mother’s struggles with Alzheimer's and getting a glimpse of her sense of humor, too. Today, they met again for a debate and heard Kathleen describe the attorney general as someone who "levels the playing field" on issues from environmental protection to reproductive rights.

Conversation is constant here. We got to speak with attendees while at our EMILY's List booth at the exhibition all, meeting long-time supporters and sharing our mission with folks new to what we do -- and handed out some pretty cute notepads. At panel discussions and roundtable talks, we heard hopes, frustrations, and desire for more progressive action.
