Yesterday, the 113th Congress was sworn into office, including 16 new EMILY’s List women to the House and 9 EMILY’s List women to the Senate. With a record number of women entering both chambers and the incoming freshman class being the most diverse in history, there was a lot to celebrate. So we did!

Yesterday the 113th Congress was sworn into office, including 16 new EMILY’s List women to the House and 9 EMILY’s List women to the Senate – and of course, Maggie Hassan, the only female Democratic governor in the entire country. What a way to kick off the new year: a new batch of pro-choice Democratic women in Congress who will continue fighting for women and families and holding Republicans accountable. We’re so proud of the accomplishments of these women, the leadership they’ll bring to office and all the progress they’ll achieve.

Melissa Harris-Perry said it best on Sunday when she told viewers on her MSNBC program: “Forget binders full of women, New Hampshire has a delegation full of them.”

Nail-biter. Nerve-wracking. History-making. These are just a few of the terms being used after Tuesday night’s reelection victory of President Barack Obama, and how relatively early the race was called for him when so many observers thought we’d be counting ballots for days. But when it comes to women, it should be called “The Night of Firsts!”
