We knew Judy Chu was a remarkable leader with an inspiring story when we supported her earlier this year in her race for Congress. And it's no surprise that others are already taking note.

The Hill featured Chu in a piece this week about her role as a bridge-builder and community activist. It also noted, of course, that she's one of 12 trailblazing Asian Americans currently serving in Congress, the largest group of Asian Americans in history to serve at the same time. After winning election this year, Chu became the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress.

For Chu, the symbolic richness of her election hit home when she was sworn in in July. She brought her two young nieces to witness the ceremony on the House floor, realizing she was exposing a new generation to the importance of politics and their potential role in it. Chu was also affected by the reactions of her constituents and supporters.

“People had tears in their eyes,” she says. “It’s times like that when I realize there’s been a void for so long. People thought it couldn’t be done.”

Judy Chu has now officially taken her place as a member of the 111th Congress, making her the first Chinese-American congresswoman in U.S. history.

After winning the special election in CA-32 earlier this week, Judy was sworn in by Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday. Unsurprisingly, she hit the ground running and is already tackling major issues like health care reform.

First, I would like to extend a warm and generous welcome to my new colleague in the House, Judy Chu of California. I look forward to having Judy in our caucus, and I am sure she will bring a strong voice to Congress and continue the progressive legacy of her predecessor, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. It’s always great to have another Democrat and another woman joining our ranks on Capitol Hill.

Congresswoman Chu will be the 80th woman in the House of Representatives who was elected with the help of EMILY’s List. This is a remarkable milestone. I have served in the House of Representatives since 1990, and can tell you first hand -- the transformation over even the past twenty years in terms of opportunity for female candidates has been extraordinary. When I ran for office in 1990, 77 women sought seats in the House and Senate. In 2008, 133 women ran for seats in the House alone.

Looking back over this 80th victory, and speaking as a former executive director of the organization, I want to say I am exceedingly proud of the hard work put forth by EMILY’s List over the years. Without EMILY’s List, this progress simply would not have been possible.

When I heard the news about Judy Chu’s victory last night, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. What an incredible opportunity to send another woman leader to the U.S. House of Representatives to carry on the progressive tradition of her predecessor, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. I know Judy ran a top-notch campaign, and she’ll no doubt be a voice for the change we need in Congress.

Judy’s victory also marks another reason to celebrate — she is the 80th woman that EMILY’s List has helped elect to the House of Representatives!

It’s hard to believe that when we founded EMILY’s List 24 years ago, only 12 Democratic women were serving in the House. But because of the support of dedicated members – and women candidates who were willing to take on the challenge of running – we’ve changed all that. The women we’ve helped elect to the House have made an enormous mark on the work of Congress, and in our everyday lives. Each of these women brings her own experience and expertise, but all have one thing in common — they had the power of EMILY’s List behind them when they ran for office.

I can’t begin to tell you what a privilege it has been watching these women rise from being freshman members to presiding over some of the most important work in Congress. Now, when Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) looks out on the House floor, she sees women leading the charge on critical issues.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL) is an outspoken advocate in the fight against breast cancer. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (CT), EMILY’s List’s first executive director, has fought tirelessly for equal pay. Rep. Nydia Velazquez (NY), the first Puerto Rican-American woman elected to Congress in 1992, has championed the work of small businesses. And Rep. Louise Slaughter (NY) presides over the powerful House Rules Committee. Our women in the House have led efforts to protect a woman’s right to choose, to help ensure equal pay, pass the economic recovery package, and so much more.

House races don’t usually receive a lot of national media, nor are they particularly glamorous. But the work done in the House is critical to the direction of our country, and our members and staff have worked hard to help these women run winning campaigns. They’ve put aside their large list of other responsibilities to volunteer on House races in their states, or, sometimes, a long drive or a plane ride away. And, together, our members have contributed millions of dollars to the campaigns of our women running for the House.

So, today, raise your glass to Judy Chu and the other 79 women we’ve helped elect to the House. There’s more work to be done, without question, but let’s celebrate how far we’ve come since EMILY’s List was founded 24 years ago.

State Board of Equalization member Judy Chu has won the special election for the 32nd Congressional District seat to become the first Chinese American woman in the House of Representatives.

With 100% of the ballots counted, Chu, a Democrat, had 62% of the vote in Tuesday's election for the San Gabriel Valley-based seat vacated when Hilda Solis became U.S. Labor secretary.

It's election day in California's 32nd congressional district, where EMILY's List candidate Judy Chu is favored to win the open seat of now-Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. After coming out on top in a tough primary, Chu is positioned to win this special election and make her way to Washington.

LOS ANGELES -- Voters in a Los Angeles-area district are picking a new member of Congress Tuesday.

Democrat Judy Chu is favored to be the next representative for the 32nd Congressional District. It's a heavily Democratic area that covers part of Los Angeles and its eastern suburbs.

If elected, Chu would be Southern California's only Asian-American in Congress.

We're less than a week away from the special election in CA-32, where EMILY's List candidate Judy Chu is running to replace now-Secretary of Labor (and former EL candidate!) Hilda Solis.

Judy came out on top in a bruising primary and, in this heavily Democratic district, she's expected to come out on top next Tuesday, making her the 80th woman EMILY's List has helped elect to the House.

The Pasadena Star-News endorsed Judy today, saying the choice "couldn't be clearer" among the candidates. "A public servant in the district for decades and formerly a respected community college teacher here, Chu served on the Monterey Park City Council for 13 years before being elected to the California Assembly. She currently serves on the powerful tax-setting Board of Equalization in Sacramento."
