Yesterday marked the end of Rep. Gabby Giffords’ final week in Congress, as she’s opted to focus on continuing her amazing recovery. Gabby’s time in Congress came to a close with an emotional and tearful tribute to Gabby by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who then read Gabby’s letter of resignation to the Speaker of the House. I can’t imagine there was a dry eye left.

Gabby, we thank you for letting EMILY's List walk with you every step of the way. In big cities and in small towns throughout this country, hundreds of thousands of EMILY’s List members have been inspired by you, and felt, in ways large and small, a part of your efforts to make this country better and of your many, many victories.

Gabby Giffords Mark Kelly

"Tough, Tough, Tough"

Last night as I watched the extraordinary story of Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly, there were moments when my eyes filled up. Seeing those pictures of Gabby looking weak in the first weeks after the shooting and watching her struggle is hard. But there were more moments when my fist was up in the air, cheering along with every victory and every milestone and every moment when Gabby's spirit and her big, strong heart reminded me of the woman she is. And then I realized that unconsciously, I was mimicking Gabby -- that unstoppable determination, the glee she takes in a job well done, expressed by that jaunty arm flung out into the world around her like punctuation.

We will never forget the tragic day in January when our friend, Cong. Gabrielle Giffords, was attacked, along with members of her team and her beloved community in Tucson. But we’ll also never forget the powerful example Gabby’s set in the days and months since – awing us all with her determination, grit, and deep love for her family, her community, and her country. Whether walking up the plane stairs to see husband Mark Kelly’s final Space Shuttle mission or walking on to the House floor to cast a critical vote, Gabby is always moving forward.

Last night, we got to see the American spirit at its absolute best. Gabrielle Giffords arrived in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives to a standing ovation from colleagues on both sides of the aisle. She walked in beaming, without help, and she cast her vote. She said she was happy to get back to work.

It was heartening to see some incredible women – including EMILY’s List alumnae – get their due in TIME’s 100 list for 2011. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was lauded, Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards was honored, and President Obama honored Cong. Gabrielle Giffords.

But in the darkest of hours, the human spirit has an immeasurable capacity to rebound, rise up and meet challenges, to ensure that lives did not perish in vain. We have witnessed this capacity throughout the week as an entire nation joined together to support all those lost and injured. This tragedy has prompted us to reflect on many things: how fragile life is, how to make America a safer country, and even how to treat each other with fairness and civility, regardless of our personal and political beliefs.

President Obama gave a poignant, powerful speech yesterday in Tucson at a memorial service for the victims of Saturday’s shooting, including Cong. Gabrielle Giffords. Our president’s words were that of a public servant honoring others who serve us; a man who shared in our grief at the senseless violence; and a father who wants a better country for his two young daughters.

I was so moved by the responses to my message on Saturday about the senseless attack on Cong. Gabby Giffords, staffers, a federal judge, and constituents who were merely participating in our democratic process. Your words of support for Gabby and her family, your heartbreak over the scope of the tragedy, your sense of belonging to a powerful community of fellow EMILY's List members.

In the coming days, we will stand as a community with Cong. Gabrielle Giffords as she fights for her life, as we have stood with her through the years. We will mourn the loss of those innocent bystanders. We will honor the dedicated public servants. And, we will carry on our mission to encourage and support women like the young girl killed on Saturday, Christina Taylor Greene, whose interest in government was a great example of the next generation’s powerful future.

It is with a heavy heart that I write about the senseless violence in Tucson today, where a gunman attacked Cong. Gabby Giffords, her staff, and constituents at a public event. As I write, we know that at least one member of Congresswoman Giffords' staff, as well as a young child and other bystanders, were killed in the cold-blooded attack, and Congresswoman Giffords is fighting for her life, following a bullet entering her brain at close range.

With election day just around the corner, all hands are on deck to get out the candidates’ messages and sway undecided voters. Cong. Gabrielle Giffords made an appearance at the University of Arizona to inspire a group of hopeful Young Democrats to get out the vote. She reminded them of how much is at stake this election cycle and why no one can afford to stay home.

No dirty tricks or smears here: an EMILY’s List program in Arizona has begun informing voters about the choices they face in the upcoming election. We’ve sent mail to targeted voters about Congs. Ann Kirkpatrick and Gabrielle Giffords. As POLITICO puts it: ”the mailers follow a tried-and-true EMILY's List method this cycle: They're not noisy or caustic, but they draw a bright line between Democrats and their challengers when it comes to policy.”
