On standing up for Roe

I walked away from NARAL Pro-Choice America's dinner with an emotion I didn't expect -- a sort of warm-bodied fuzziness, coupled with a stand-up-and-fight style of motivation. Because the stories shared in that room, of women unable to obtain basic health services, either because of cost, draconian legislation, or simply the region of the country where they live -- I couldn't help but be as committed as ever to the goal of protecting a woman's right to choose. But that's not even close to the whole story of the people in that room.

On the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I woke up before dawn. I pulled on my thermal shirt, laced up my running shoes, and headed out the door. I pounded the pavement along Rock Creek Parkway, sweeping up and around the Tidal Basin and onto the National Mall. When I got to the Mall, I stopped to watch the setup for the "March for Life," the annual anti-choice rally.

Like any normal kid, I watched a lot of TV when I was little, but there was always one show in particular that stood out for me. While Rainbow Brite was busy having some series of Narcoleptic faints whenever an evil-doer showed his face, and “Scooby Doo”’s Velma was losing her glasses for the millionth time (seriously, why did she never think to invest in contacts?!), Xena Warrior Princess was out there kicking injustice and ignorance in the face, mostly literally.

As economies around the world work frantically to avoid another downtrend, the US has turned to the Supercommittee and congress to solve its fiscal woes. While the Obama administration is committed to seeing how women might solve the problem, the radical right seems more intent on restricting women than harnessing their potential.

I have always been aware of the inequalities in society and the world, but these experiences made me more knowledgeable and passionate than I would have been otherwise. I couldn’t take it anymore. How could I feel comfortable in a world where insurance companies sometimes think of being female as a pre-existing condition? How could so many other people ignore the fact that women are paid less, treated badly and underrepresented in certain fields, and unable to control their own reproductive future? If I can’t control my own body and make my own personal decisions, how can I ever hope to control the other aspects of my life?

Saudi women, who are banned from driving automobiles, ventured out on real and virtual streets last Friday to fight for this right that women in America enjoy every day. Inspired by the May imprisonment of activist Manal Al Sharif for posting videos of herself driving, Saudi women took to the street and to Twitter in support of the cause.

April 12th is Equal Pay Day, when we call attention to how women continue to struggle to be treated fairly in the workplace. Equal pay doesn’t stop at being paid the same as men for the same work: it is also about securing proper retirement funds, sufficient health benefits, and equal opportunities for promotion. We are so proud that EMILY’s List alum Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro is reintroducing the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Over the past few weeks, the Republican leadership has put forth a set of extreme bills designed to drastically roll back women’s reproductive freedoms. What they haven’t been able to do in the courts, they’re now trying to do with the tax code, and these efforts are just too extreme for America.

While we’re pleased that the GOP gave into the pressure around the danger of redefining rape, we have to remain vigilant: there is no victory until this assault on women and their families has ended – and this bill is still part-and-parcel of the GOP’s anti-woman agenda.

I first learned about GOP-backed H.R. 3, the bill that would redefine rape, last week, and like so many others, I was shocked, upset, and angry. But I was not alone, and I watched as one online activist after another began incredible efforts to sound the alarm about this cruel bill that would tell survivors of rape that they just don’t count if it wasn’t “forcible.”
