As economies around the world work frantically to avoid another downtrend, the US has turned to the Supercommittee and congress to solve its fiscal woes. While the Obama administration is committed to seeing how women might solve the problem, the radical right seems more intent on restricting women than harnessing their potential.

Speaker Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell each announced their three picks for the all-powerful, debt slashing “Super Committee” this morning. And, in a shocking ode to the party’s history, they chose… I hope you’re sitting down for this… six white males. Lost my socks there.

On the 48th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, women still only make 77 cents on the male dollar. This fact was brought to our attention in a discussion we attended recently sponsored by EMILY’s List’s Senator Barbara Mikulski and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro on pay equity.

A new report released by the Joint Economic Committee confirms what millions of women already know the hard way: women face obstacles in our economy on many fronts, including a pay gap that hasn’t improved in 10 years, expensive child care, and inflexible working arrangements. The committee is chaired by EMILY’s List alum Cong. Carolyn Maloney (NY), who said, “Women have made extraordinary progress in the last several decades – in pay, education and overall economic health. But we still have a ways to go to eliminate the pay gap and to achieve true economic equality. To really rev up the U.S. engine of economic growth, we need to finally and fully unlock the economic potential of women."

We at EMILY’s List are no strangers to the deceptive, unfair, and sometimes downright dangerous campaign ads run by the Chamber of Commerce during this last election cycle. A particularly ugly case in point: in Wisconsin, the Chamber ran an ad against EMILY’s List candidate Julie Lassa that included her family’s home phone number. Turns out, we’re not the only ones outraged by the Chamber’s aggressively right-wing agenda as demonstrated by their ads: as reported by POLITICO, local groups are distancing themselves or even quitting in protest.

Politicians certainly like to talk about what they're going to do about the economic crisis, but Deb Markowitz stands out for having a real, viable plan for what she'll do for Vermont as governor: expand the economy and create new jobs by focusing on her state's most promising industries. Deb's plan came from her Jobs Tour of Vermont, when she did something else pretty remarkable: truly listened to the concerns of business owners and what they need to get back on their feet.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined many of our women in the House at a press conference this week, speaking about the importance of job creation legislation and calling out Senate Republicans who are obstructing forward movement. While the Senate play politics with proposed bills, American families suffer at home -- and our women are set on changing that.

In case you missed it, there was a really great article in TIME last week about how women leaders are changing the way Wall Street works. Asking "What if women ran Wall Street?" the article describes the tough road women still face in reaching the top echelons of the financial industry -- but how the ones who have made it are making a big impact. (Worth noting: Currently, just 3% of Fortune 500 companies employ a woman as CEO...)
