Breast Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection, because early detection-as with any cancer- plays a huge role in increasing ones chance of survival. One in eight women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetimes, a ratio that has been on the rise over the past few decades.

Women finally earned the right to vote 91 years ago today - after 72 years of largely unappreciated, back-breaking, work. It took another 66 years before we helped elect the first Democratic Senator in her own right - today Barbara Mikulski is the longest serving female Senator. And she shares the chamber with 11 other Democratic women.

During last year's health care debate, we found out that simply being a woman was treated as a pre-existing condition by insurance providers. But despite this outrageous and disturbing discovery, EMILY's List alums like Sen. Barbara Mikulski were there leading the fight to ensure women would be treated equally and fairly in the new reform legislation. Sen. Mikulski introduced an amendment that created an independent commission to come up with recommendations for preventative measures that insurers should provide to specifically aide women at all stages of life.

On the 48th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, women still only make 77 cents on the male dollar. This fact was brought to our attention in a discussion we attended recently sponsored by EMILY’s List’s Senator Barbara Mikulski and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro on pay equity.

Thanks to her determination, ability to organize, and the support that she received from this network of activists around the country, she made it to the Senate and continues to return year after year. We are all indebted to the work that she has done, and for that we honor her with the first of its kind We Are EMILY award.

EMILY’s List women say it best: you seriously want to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood?

Faced with increasingly likelihood of a government shutdown, EMILY’s List women in Congress are doing what they do best – representing our interests by telling it like it is. Here’s what our advocates have to say about Republican brinksmanship over funding Planned Parenthood, which has nothing to do with fiscal responsibility and everything to do with an anti-woman agenda.

At the Athena Film Festival at Barnard College last week, I was thrilled to watch the compelling new documentary called "Miss Representation," which addresses the many problems of our media's portrayals of women, including women in leadership. I had the chance to speak with Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who wrote and directed the film.

Mikulski started organizing casual events where the women could get together with "no staff, no memos, no leaks and no men"several years ago, in cooperation with her colleague (and fellow EMILY's List candidate) Sen. Claire McCaskill. Through their meetings and friendships, they have cultivated a space where the women of the Senate feel comfortable debating issues despite difference of opinion. They may not always agree on the policy choices, but their respect for a civil political discourse manifests on the Senate floor and even on the Sunday shows.

Because, Alice, the entire reason EMILY’s List exists is to make it possible for women — rich, poor, black, white, young, mature, et al — to raise the money they need to run viable, winning campaigns for office. And we have a long list of successful candidates — most of them women of ordinary means — to prove it.

Senator Barbara Mikulski is known amongst her colleagues as the "Dean" of Senate women. She was the first Democratic woman elected to the U.S. Senate in her own right – her groundbreaking campaign was our first, the inspiration for EMILY's List back in 1985. The EMILY's List community has stood with Sen. Mikulski for over two decades. She has fought for us time and time again -- and we've done the same for her, most recently supporting her successful reelection this past November.
