With more than 21 months to go until the 2012 elections, no one can accurately predict the outcome of key races around the country. But as the WOMEN VOTE! Director here at EMILY's List, it's my job to follow the trends in public opinion, particularly amongst women voters.

There's no doubt we face challenges as the 112th Congress convenes, but there is also reason for celebration. All of you helped elect a strong group of pro-choice Democratic women to fight for us, including four new women of color in the House, and it was a thrill to have them sworn in yesterday.

From K Street to Capitol Hill: lobbyists will run the new Congress

During Speaker-elect John Boehner’s tearful speech on election night, he pledged to respect the will of the people, and promised that “the people’s agenda will be our agenda.” Oh, what a difference a few weeks can make. Speaker-elect Boehner announced yesterday that he will bring on a top medical industry lobbyist, Brett Loper, as his policy director. Loper fiercely lobbied against health care reform, despite the tremendous benefits it has for the American people, particularly women. This should give you an idea about how Boehner’s new policy director will advise him when the question of health care reform inevitably arises.

When reflecting on a tough year for Democrats and women, it’s helpful to examine some of the strategies that helped us protect the seats of advocates like Sen. Barbara Boxer and Sen. Patty Murray. One such tactic was EMILY's List's WOMEN VOTE! program. Looking at the numbers and impact of WOMEN VOTE!, we can take away some valuable lessons for our upcoming battles to reclaim the House and increase the number of woman elected officials.

As my colleagues know all too well (they have the patience of saints), I’m a proud Californian. I was even prouder than usual when, back in my home state for Thanksgiving weekend, I heard that Kamala Harris was declared California’s next attorney general. Kamala was an EMILY’s List POP candidate, and she is the first woman – and person of color – to be California’s top attorney.

This election cycle, we heard endless hype about the Republican “Mama Grizzlies” and supposed new faces of feminism. Even with all the hoopla surrounding the "Year of the Republican Woman," it comes down to this: the Democratic Party is still the party that cares about women and their families.

Well, it was a night we won't soon forget: we kept our majority in the Senate with a huge victory for Barbara Boxer, but we lost the House and some of the amazing women you've helped elect. I know that you've all put so much into supporting our candidates this cycle, so I wanted to share some initial thoughts with you.

Our President, Stephanie Schriock, has been making calls today to the dedicated EMILY's List members who provided critical resources and support to our women candidates. She wanted to share this special message from one of our greatest advocates, Sen. Barbara Boxer, who lets us know what having EMILY’s List on her side meant to her.

It looks pretty chilly up there in New Hampshire, but as you'll see in this video update from the trail, our volunteers are bundling up and working hard on election day for our candidates. Ann McLane Kuster is up against former GOP Cong. Charlie Bass, and polls show this one is going to be a nail biter. Don't forget, as our volunteer says: get out and vote!

It’s a truth universally acknowledged: if Carl Paladino’s lips are moving, then he’s probably offending someone. But just because Paladino’s appalling assertion that Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is Sen. Chuck Schumer’s “little girl” is the latest in a string of racist, sexist, and otherwise tasteless statements, it doesn’t mean we’re not going to call him out.

Continuing on the trail, Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden stopped in California to stand with Sen. Barbara Boxer.

Using only direct quotes from Dean Scontras, this hard-hitting video from Maine Cong. Chellie Pingree asks tough questions about what Scontras really believes: anti-choice or supporter of Roe v. Wade? For same-sex marriage or for a constitutional ban on it? Wants off-shore drilling or doesn’t?

What we do know is that the Chamber is an interest group advocating for corporate America. It's hard to say more because it does not disclose its donors.
