Outrageous Attack on Sen. Patty Murray

Right-wing special interest groups have already started a vicious attack campaign against Sen. Patty Murray, complete with misleading TV ads costing over $750,000 that start airing today up and down Washington state. Patty got into politics to prove to people that a "mom in tennis shoes" could actually make a difference. Now, a group of Bush-era Republicans called the American Action Network are trying to bludgeon Patty with those very words -- watch this infuriating ad for yourself to see what she's up against.
The American Action Network is part and parcel of Karl Rove's vast political network aiming to "reclaim" what we so soundly rejected in 2008. This group, which is spending three-quarters of a million dollars to tarnish Patty Murray, is led by Republicans such as former Senator Norm Coleman, who lost his seat to Senator Al Franken, former Senator George Allen, who lost his re-election bid after insensitive racial remarks, and Fred Malek, who helped Richard Nixon identify and persecute Jewish officials in the Bureau of Labor Statistics -- and now supports Sarah Palin.
The ads smearing Patty Murray are just the beginning -- plenty more money and vitriol will be poured into this critical race. Patty faces these attacks because she stands for exactly what ultra-conservatives want to roll back: looking out for the needs of her state's women and their families, increasing access to quality health care, and protecting the environment for future generations. Her opponent, Dino Rossi, has turned his back time and again on Washington's working families -- supporting the lowering of the minimum wage and voting against unemployment benefit extensions -- while yearning for the days before women's right to choose was guaranteed by Roe v. Wade.
EMILY's List proudly supports Senator Murray because she's not afraid to stand up to right-wingers who fight to limit reproductive rights and who don't have the interests of working families at heart. Patty is a strong voice for the women of Washington and this country, and we won't let the attacks of far-right interests groups keep her from advocating for progressive change. Just as Patty has stood up for women time and again, we'll continue to stand up for her.
