EMILY's List
Our network is bringing change to New York

When I was an intern here at EMILY's List, I had the good fortune to help out at one of our annual Majority Council Conferences. These are filled with great events, but one in particular has really stayed with me over the past two years: the POP breakfast.
POP is our acronym for the Political Opportunity Program. My colleagues in the POP department are great at what they do - helping qualified, pro-choice Democratic women prepare, stage, and win campaigns for state and local offices around the country. Between 2001 and 2009, POP held over 150 trainings in 35 states, and trained over 5,550 people. Today, there is a pipeline of wonderful women who are running city council meetings, state Houses, and taking on pretty big challenges.
As Politico writes, that is just the case in New York:
"With help from EMILY's List over the last few years, the state Senate Democrats now have 10 women competing in districts ranging from swing-county Suffolk in Long Island to more rural areas of upstate New York."
While it is exciting to hear Politico proclaim that 2010 is the 'The Year of the Woman' in New York, we know that this is not a random phenomenon. Rather it is the result of years of hard work and dedication from EMILY's List members and our network of women around the country from city hall all the way up.
But don't take our word for it. Check out Kathleen Rice, candidate for New York attorney general, Jocelyn Benson fighting to become Michigan's next secretary of state, or Kamala Harris, Democratic nominee for California attorney general. They're running inspiring campaigns for statewide office and are our best bet on who the future leaders of America will be. These women candidates at the breakfast, many only a few years older than me, inspired me to come back to EMILY’s List today to ensure that women candidates have the resources they need to win.
