EMILY's List
Sen. Klobuchar knows her history
By Hilary Nachem on 07/02/2010 @ 01:15 PM
In case you missed it this week, one of our favorite women in the Senate, Amy Klobuchar had the opportunity to take Senator Tom Coburn back in history a bit.
Coburn is a familiar name in Washington, but many also know him as "Dr. No" for his propensity to use Senate procedure to block legislation -- like emergency unemployment insurance. He's even confessed that he loves to see gridlock in Congress.
Earlier this week, during his questioning of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, Coburn asserted that America was more free thirty years ago. Luckily (as opposed to thirty years ago) today we have two pro-choice Democratic women on the Senate Judiciary Committee: Dianne Feinstein and Amy Klobuchar.
Sen. Klobuchar suggested that Coburn's idea of freedom is a bit biased. Thirty years ago, women in America were not represented at the highest levels of government. In 1980, there were no women on the Supreme Court. And no women on the Senate Judiciary Committee. And, yes you guessed it, no women in the United States Senate.
You can watch school him here, and thanks to Think Progress for picking this out for us:
