What should be the last thing on your mind when thinking about your credit score? Medicals bills.

Con. Mary Jo Kilroy (OH-15) has introduced remarkable legislation that would ensure companies couldn't consider paid off or settled medical debt when assessing individuals' credit scores -- a policy difference that would literally change the lives of Americans around the country.

Mary Jo, whom we helped elect in 2008, introduced the Medical Debt Relief Act to help the estimated 72 million Americans whose lives are affected by medical debt. She's been working hard to recruit cosponsors from both sides of the aisle because there's no doubt the issue affects people across the board.

“We need to help hard-working Americans who play by the rules and unfairly face trouble with their credit scores just because they had an unforeseen medical problem or didn’t know about a medical debt," Mary Jo said. "All too often, Americans find that medical debt burdens them with higher interest rates when they apply for a car or home loan, or even when applying for a job."

Mary Jo has been at the forefront of change in Congress, serving as a leading advocate for health care reform. She's facing a tough rematch against her '08 opponent, bank lobbyist and anti-choicer Steve Stivers, and she's counting on us to makes sure she's able to keep her seat in Congress and continue her fight for progress.
