Michele Bachmann doesn't speak for me either
By Jen Bluestein Lamb on 08/24/2010 @ 03:44 PM
Here we go ladies and gentlemen; the fight for Minnesota's sixth congressional district is officially on. Michele Bachmann, the champion of the Tea Party Caucus, defender of the radical right, and leader of all things anti-choice has released her first ad attacking EMILY's List-endorsed candidate Tarryl Clark. It is no surprise that the ad targets fiscally responsible, results-focused Tarryl, and promises more attack ads "coming soon."
As Tarryl's campaign stated in response to the ad, "Tarryl Clark consistently voted to hold down taxes on 95% of working Minnesotans, including reducing the burden of property taxes." Tarryl has focused on real solutions for Minnesotans while Bachmann has spent her time on FOX News and at tea party rallies.
Clark and Bachmann represent a perfect example of the differences we've been talking about in our Sarah Doesn't Speak for Me campaign, an opportunity to give a platform to the thousands of American who believe that Sarah Palin and her endorsed candidates don't speak for them or the issues they care about.
In the sixth district we have EMILY's List-supported Tarryl Clark vs. Sarah Palin-backed Michele Bachmann. The contrast and the choice could not be clearer for voters. While Tarryl is out in the district talking to voters about creating jobs and providing affordable healthcare for families, Bachmann has instead represented the "Party of NO" with gusto. She has even said that "we must slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing" – this "thing" being stopping healthcare reform. Bachmann's radical agenda and forceful opposition to supporting a woman's right to choose is, simply put, hazardous to Minnesotans and could set our country back decades.
Now that the race has truly began and the attack ads are in full force, lets show Michele and Sarah that they don't speak for us, by helping send Tarryl Clark to Congress.

Alex Sink steps ahead
By Hilary on 08/20/2010 @ 06:34 PM
We've had a great week here at EMILY's List and the excitement hasn't stopped yet. We were thrilled with the results of a new poll showing Alex Sink leading BOTH Republican candidates for governor.
These numbers are great news! But the work is far from over. It's a tough race and Sink's competitors aren't letting up. For just the week leading up to Tuesday's primary, Rick Scott spent more than $5 million on broadcast and cable television alone.
It is so important for strong women with the best interests of us all to serve in office – and as Florida's Chief Financial Officer, Alex is definitely a strong woman! Her Women's Week of Action reminds women in Florida (and everywhere else!) that their support, participation and votes are essential for a win come November. She's spent the week bringing women across Florida together, participating in happy hours, house parties and community service events like Backpacks of Hope and Dress for Success.
We can't afford to let candidates like Rick Scott or Bill McCollum win in November. Their backwards, right-wing policies would turn back the clock on crucial advancements in women's rights.
This month marks the 90th anniversary of a momentous win in the battle for women's rights: our right to vote. So come on ladies, roll up your sleeves, get involved and help put Alex in the governor's seat.

Debating in New Mexico
By Hilary on 08/20/2010 @ 03:14 PM
Last night was the first debate in the New Mexico gubernatorial election. The topic was education, and EMILY's List candidate Diane Denish excelled.
She spoke passionately about public school reforms to ensure that students across the state receive the opportunities they need to be successful in school and in life.
Her opponent, Sarah Palin endorsee Susana Martinez, who's now notorious for taking the single largest donation in the history of the state -- from the same developer who bankrolled the infamous Swift Boat attack ads in 2004-- and who's under scrutiny for her management of state funds, including no-bid contracts and Wall Street-style bonuses for her employees, did not have such a good showing.
At the debate Martinez couldn't seem to gets her facts straight about what education policies she supports. In the primary, Martinez advocated for months for a school voucher program that would take state aid away from the public schools, but now claims the exact opposite. Well Susana, Diane remembers and so do New Mexico’s voters. As NM Politics reported, "Susana’s been caught in one big whopper, but in a bizarre showing of chutzpah, seems to be doubling down on it." We couldn’t agree more. The audacity that Martinez shows when flip-flopping solely for political gain is shocking, and not what the women and families of New Mexico need in a governor.
EMILY's is so excited to rally our supporters to champion Diane Denish, who is calling Martinez out on her extremist views and who is the leader New Mexico needs.
Go get ’em Diane!
Tom Ganley bravely embraces ignorance
By Lisa McIntire on 08/20/2010 @ 01:00 PM
One thing is for certain: in his bid for Congress, Republican candidate Tom Ganley is willing to spend everything - and say anything - in a desperate attempt to unseat Cong. Betty Sutton. He has loaned his campaign $6.5 million as of the end of June, and now he's resorting to embarrassingly ignorant comments to get attention. When asked about President Obama by Roll Call yesterday, Ganley replied, "I don't have a position on whether he's a Muslim."
Hate to break the news to Ganley, but it actually isn't possible to have a position on a fact - for example, not taking a position on whether gravity exists. And the fact is, President Obama has been clear about what his religion is from the beginning. It's just that simple. A large and difficult part of being a leader is deciding and defending your positions - but Tom, this one is a no-brainer! A freebie, even.
We'll lead by example and show Tom Ganley something you CAN take a position on: we're supporting Cong. Betty Sutton for Ohio's 13th district. Now, that wasn't so hard, was it?

Can I get a factcheck, please?
By Hilary on 08/18/2010 @ 09:40 AM
A fact check for the GOP, that is. It's apparent that the Republicans have let yet another thing fall through the cracks - reality.
Last night, we received an email tip from a friend that makes it clear "even the GOP doesn't know what Richard Burr has been doing..."
I couldn't have said it better myself. They're emailing their right-wing base and attacking our candidate in North Carolina, Elaine Marshall. Apparently, though, they forgot it was Republican Richard Burr -- you know, THEIR candidate -- who's the incumbent in the race and has been in the Senate since 2005.
Help Defeat Elaine Marshall! For nearly two years, America has suffered from the liberal Democrat's control of Washington and if Elaine Marshall is sent back to the Senate, we can only expect more of the same...
Ouch. Pretty embarrassing, right? Click here to help Elaine Marshall battle the GOP and their bumbling practices.
