Fifty years ago today, Congress passed the Equal Pay Act, creating the first legal guarantee of wage equity for women at a time when discrimination was rampant., This historic measure marked the first step in the long march towards recognition of women as full and equal members of society. Today, we honor the legacy of the women who came before us and remember that we are still marching.

Last year, when Republican candidates launched an all-out assault on women’s rights, we fought back, turning out in record numbers to protect the progress we’ve made. Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day began in 1993 simply as “Take Our Daughters To Work Day.” It was designed to help girls “connect what they were learning in the classroom to the world of work,” and introduce them to a world of options of which they weren’t necessarily aware. Since 2003, the program has included both girls and boys, with the same mission: to teach our nation’s children what they are capable of.

Here at EMILY’s List, we spend a lot of time talking about the importance of having women at the table. Last night, twenty outstanding American women took that idea literally – not for the first time – as they gathered to have dinner and to discuss sensible solutions to the country’s most pressing issues.
