Here's to Hillary

March is National Women’s history month and today is International Women’s Day! When we hear the words ‘international’ and ‘women’ one EMILY’s List woman always springs to mind. We hope you can take some time to celebrate that certain special someone with us.  Can you guess who she is?

Here are some hints:
1) In 2001 she became the first ever First Lady to hold public office.
2) She was the first woman to represent New York in the Senate.
3) She created the position of United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues in 2009
You guessed it; we’re talking about Hillary Clinton. A glass-ceiling breaking champion for the rights of women and girls around the world, Hillary Clinton pushed the social, economic, and political empowerment of women and girls to the front of the world stage.
During her tenure as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton broke down barriers for women at home in the U.S. and abroad. She reminded us that while we may practice different religions or speak different languages, at the end of the day all women are fighting for the same basic things: human rights, equality, and freedom.
We need to remember those similarities.  Because another similarity we have is that too many of us face too many risks every day. As Hillary explained at the 2012 Women in the World Summit:
“Extremists always focus on women [and that] remains a mystery to me. But they all seem to. It doesn’t matter what country they’re in or what religion they claim. They all want to control women. They want to control how we dress. They want to control how we act. They even want to control the decisions we make about our own health and our own bodies. Yes, it is hard to believe but even here at home we have to stand up for women’s rights and we have to reject efforts to marginalize any one of us...”
And she has a point. Extremists in all cultures seem to focus their efforts at controlling women. Even here in America, conservative leaders have often targeted women. Whether it is Todd Akin sharing his vile theory on “legitimate rape” or the House GOP letting the Violence Against Women Act expire, or 11 Republican men holding a panel on access to birth control, women in America have something to lose and something to fight for.
Here at EMILY’s List we know what women can do, what women are capable of and how they can change the world. That is why we are working hard to elect pro-choice Democratic women, women like Hillary Clinton who will fight for equality and fairness for all from Iowa to India.
So as we celebrate International Women’s Day we want to thank you, Hillary. And we know we are not alone in our sentiments, women around the world thank you for all that you’ve done. And if you missed it, check out Hillary Clinton’s best moments as secretary of state here
