They say nothing is so admirable in politics as a short memory -- and that must make former Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. one heck of an admirable guy. Ford, who moved from Tennessee to New York and is mulling a primary run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, seems to have developed convenient amnesia about his once-firm views on a number of issues as he talks himself up as a potential primary challenger to New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Here are some examples of Ford’s dramatic turnabout from his previous public statements:

What Harold Ford said then on choice: What Harold Ford says now on choice:
Ford: "I'm Pro-Life." Q: What would you do about abortion? CORKER: I am pro-life. I support the culture of life. I'd appoint judges who don't create law from the bench, but interpret the laws that are on the books. I'd love to incrementally work to lessen the number of abortions in this country. FORD: I'm pro-life too. We've got to take steps early on, even before a woman gets pregnant, by putting character education & abstinence programs in our schools, and other legislation to reduce the number of abortions. [Ontheissues.org, 10/10/06]

Ford: "I Am Pro-Choice." Harold Ford wrote in a column in the New York Post in January 2010, "I am pro-choice -- have always been since I entered politics almost 15 years ago. My cumulative grade with NARAL during 10 years in Congress was right at 80 percent. Any assertions to the contrary are false." [NY Post, 1/12/10]
Ford: "I Was Not Pro-Choice At One Time." Ford, on Hannity and Colmes, stated, "I was not pro-choice at one time. We don't have votes like that in the Congress." [Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes," 11/1/06] Ford: "I've Been Pro-Choice All The Time." Ford had the following to say during a February 1, 2010 interview with Stephen Colbert. Colbert asked, "But what does that mean, 'No no, I was not pro-choice at one time'?" Ford replied,“I've been pro-choice all the time, Stephen, I’ve never not been pro-choice. I’m against late-term abortions, I’m in favor of parental notification.” [Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," 2/1/10]

What Harold Ford said then on gay marriage: What Harold Ford says now on gay marriage:
In 2006 Campaign Ad Ford Said He's Against Gay Marriage: In a response to an RNC attack Ford states on an ad, "They said I'm for gay marriage when I voted against it, for giving school girls abortion pills. All of it lies. Here's what I believe: In God, in you and a new direction. That's why I approve this message." [NY Daily News, 1/11/2010; youtube.com, accessed 10/26/06]

In Jan. 2010 Ford Declared Support For Gay Marriage On The Today Show: In an interview with Matt Lauer on Jan 11, 2010, Lauer asked, “So you’re now in favor of same sex marriage?” Ford responded, “Civil unions and same-sex marriage, yes.” [NY Daily News, 1/11/2010]

Ford Voted Twice For The Marriage Protection Amendment: Ford voted yes to H.J. Res. 88 (2006) and H.J. Res 106 (2004), which "declares that marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman; and neither the U.S. Constitution nor the constitution of any state shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon any other union." [Roll Call #463, 7/18/06; Roll Call #484, 9/30/04]
Ford Changes his mind on The Colbert Report: On a February 1, 2010 interview with Stephen Colbert, Ford said that "Over the last few years I've come to a different opinion, and I'm for marriage equality," when Colbert asked about his stance on the issue. [Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," 2/1/10]
