Hail to the Chief! Val Demings "On the List" in FL-10
Congress has more than enough “robbers” these days…slashing funds from education, infrastructure, and programs aimed at children and the poor, while preserving tax breaks for Big Oil and billionaires. We could use a few more “cops” defending women and families -- and lucky for us, Orlando’s first female chief of police Val Demings has announced plans to challenge lackluster Tea Party incumbent Daniel Webster in Florida’s 8th district.
Val regularly appears on “Who’s Who” lists like “Central Florida’s Top Power Players,” and “Orlando’s 50 Most Powerful People.” Today I’m thrilled to announce she’s “On the List” -- as one of the pro-choice Democratic women candidates we’ve singled out for early and enthusiastic support -- as well!Val has been called a “trailblazer” for her successful efforts to target illegal guns and drugs, crack down on domestic violence and step up community policing, all of which resulted in a 10.1% drop in crime -- which the city’s mayor called the “most dramatic… in the history of the city of Orlando.”
There’s no question Val’s no-nonsense approach is needed in a gridlocked Congress -- and will appeal to swing voters in this tourist- and tech-dependent region. But with a potential primary looming (Florida’s redistricting process is ongoing and new districts won’t be drawn until 2012), she’ll need to quickly raise considerable funds -- and conserve enough resources to compete with a Tea Party who, despite Cong. Webster’s unimpressive first term, will spend whatever it takes to hold the 8th district.
Florida is always a key state to watch in a presidential year -- and Val Demings just gives us one more reason to keep our eyes peeled. Hail to the Chief!
