GOP: Put Betty Sutton 'back in the kitchen'?!
By Stephanie Schriock on 04/22/2010 @ 04:46 PM
What's the best way to move women back decades? Just ask the GOP.
The Republican Review, an apparent newsletter produced by the Medina County (Ohio) Republican Executive Committee, states the following:
"Let's take Betty Sutton out of the House and put her back in the kitchen."
That's right -- they're set on defeating Cong. Betty Sutton (OH-13), whom we helped elect in 2006, and filling her spot with a conservative loyalist. And how will they go about doing that? By sending her right where they think she (and all women) belong: the kitchen.
I wish I could say I was shocked, but I can't. I can, however, say I'm appalled, annoyed, and ready to do something about it.
UPDATE: Betty released a statement on the comment -- here's some of what she said:
"Women play a vital role in every facet of this great nation from nurturing our children, caring for their families and aging parents, managing households to managing small businesses, protecting our communities and nation, and everything in between...The statement in the mailer devalues the tremendous breadth of talents of women and girls, be they Republicans, Independents, Democrats or none of the above."
She also called upon her Republican opponent, Tom Ganley, to denounce the comment, and the Medina County Republican Chairman Bill Heck, to step down.
