Girl on Fire

Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" was on loop today during EMILY's List 2013 Inauguration Brunch. Go ahead and push play on the video while you read this recap. It'll help get you fired up. I'll wait...

So many of our women were in attendance: Senators Baldwin, Warren, Hirono, Hagan and McCaskill; Representatives Bonamici, Brownley, Bustos, Capps, Duckworth, Edwards, Esty, Frankel, Fudge, Gabbard, Hahn, Kirkpatrick, Kuster, Lujan Grisham, Maloney, Negrete McLeod, Pingree, Shea-Porter, Titus, Tsongas, Wasserman Schultz, Schwartz and Meng; the country's only Democratic woman governor, Maggie Hassan; and New York mayoral candidate (and recent EMILY's List endorsee) Christine Quinn.
Also in attendance were so many supporters of EMILY's List (including some awesome men!): Senators Tester and Baucus; Representative Bera; former Congresswoman Sutton; Leader Pelosi; actress and activist Ashley Judd; HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius; outgoing Labor Secretary Hilda Solis; former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm; Sandra Fluke, Donna Brazile  - and so many more.
The theme of the 1400-person brunch was "Strength in Numbers" - and how! EMILY's List membership has quintupled over the last cycle. Our strength in numbers was no more evident than this past cycle: $52 million raised, 19 new women elected to the House, 6 Senate incumbents, 3 new Senators (all the first woman to represent their state in the Senate), and the only pro-choice Democratic woman governor in the country.

To date, EMILY's List has elected 100 women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 10 governors and over 500 women to state and local office. As Leader Pelosi commented, "If we didn't have so many women in the House, we wouldn't have had the first woman Speaker." She added, "None of this would be possible without [EMILY's List founder] Ellen Malcolm. Thank you, Ellen." The reminder of the number of ceilings EMILY's List women have shattered was stunning.

In addition to talk about 2014, the prospect of putting a woman in the Oval Office was on everyone's mind.

EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock closed her speech on this note:

[W]e are ready to take the next step. Ready to be the springboard for the next generation of Democratic women leaders. Ready to elect more Democratic women governors in 2014. Ready to help Nancy Pelosi get her gavel back. Ready to put a Democratic woman in the Oval Office - and that starts with putting a woman on the Democratic ticket in 2016! Our goal is within reach.  Our movement has never been stronger.  Our time is now.  There is strength in numbers. There is strength in this room. So, today, let's celebrate - and, tomorrow, let's get to work!

The crowd went nuts.
