Gillibrand hard at work

Our women are often so busy juggling legislation, advocacy, and outreach, it can be hard to keep up – and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York is no exception. Here’s a quick recap of just a few things she’s been up to lately:
- Today, Kirsten blogged on The Hill's Congress Blog about her effort to repeal the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. With Kirsten at the helm, there’s been forward progress on changing the policy, including work with the Senate Armed Services Committee to schedule the first hearing on the issue in 16 years.
- Kirsten is taking a lead role on the Medicare Graduate Nurses Education Act, a measure which would “help expand the nurse workforce and vocational nursing faculty by making Medicare reimbursement funds available to teaching hospitals."
- She has also been working tirelessly to get more federal funding for child care, autism research and treatment, and asthma medication for children. "Families simply can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars each month to give their child the care they need,” she says.
- Kirsten's made the environment a top priority, as well. Last week, she announced $350 million in aid for dairy farmers hurting from the financial crisis. Already, Kirsten is a strong supporter of the Kerry-Boxer climate bill introduced in the Senate last week, and she’s made it clear that she’d dedicated to working with the legislation to see that New York farmers and the environment benefit from potential changes.
