EMILY's List
Carrying a poor word choice to the bitter end

One Republican, speaking metaphorically, has articulated what many suspect has been fueling much of the town hall rage: the GOP needs a "great white hope" to lead the party out of the darkness and into the light. Seeking to reassure a conservative crowd, Kansas GOP Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins went on to say that there are several promising young Republicans in Congress who could do the job. Like her, all are white. Jenkins's spokeswoman quickly issued a pro forma apology for the bad choice of words:
"There's no doubt the Republican Party has gone through some dark and challenging times in recent years, but thankfully bright young leaders have stepped up to lead the party into the future and she hopes to be a part of it…”
Maybe if she clung a little less tightly to the original metaphor, that apology would seem more sincere.
