Top 5 Worst Things About Paul Ryan's Record

It’s a big day in presidential politics. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has chosen Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate. The Vice President pick says a lot about a nominee’s legislative priorities, and with Ryan joining Romney on the ticket, we think there are a few things you should know.

1. Paul Ryan authored budget proposals that would end Medicare as we know it. His budget proposal would repeal health care reform, sticking seniors with the bill and leaving their health care at risk. This is especially problematic for women, who make up fifty-six percent of Medicare beneficiaries.

2. Paul Ryan’s budget plan would have cut SNAP grants by 18%. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) grants, also known as food stamps, has kept 3.9 million Americans (equivalent to the entire population of Oregon), including 1.7 million children, out of poverty, and allowed them to keep their families from going hungry. This plan also would have drastically cut jobs, leaving 174,000 people out of work.

3. Paul Ryan is bad for women. He voted for a bill that would have effectively banned abortion coverage by insurers who received federal or taxpayer funding. This bill, which Ryan favored, would have allowed anyone involved to refuse to perform an abortion for any reason, even if the life of the woman needing the abortion was in danger.

4. Paul Ryan is extremely anti-choice. Paul Ryan voted for the Protect Life Act, which grants hospitals far-reaching powers to deny women abortion care, without any exception for emergency situations. US law currently requires hospitals receiving federal funds to provide emergency care to anyone in need up to the point at which they can be stabilized or transferred, if the original hospital is incapable of providing the care they need. "The misnamed Protect Life Act is about allowing women to die if they need an emergency abortion," said Meghan Rhoad, women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. "It is a vicious attack on women’s rights and on the most basic right to life.’”

5. Paul Ryan wants to defund Planned Parenthood. This ideological attack would only result in more women losing access to necessary and basic health care. One in five American women have used Planned Parenthood health services.

There you have it. While Mitt Romney parades Paul Ryan around as his pick to be first in the line of succession to the presidency, you now have the facts. Paul Ryan has a long history of voting against affordable health care and women’s health. His legislative priorities leave millions of people at risk of losing their health care and in medical and financial danger. Combined with Mitt Romney’s bad policies, it’s clear: the Romney/Ryan ticket is bad for women and families.

If we want to re-elect President Obama and elect the women who can hold Romney, Ryan, and the rest of the far right accountable, we need you with us. Go GOP and Paul Ryan!!! I

Go GOP and Paul Ryan!!! I think he's great!

terrible/great selection

Since everyone involved with Emily's List is politically active, I know this is "preaching to the choir", but while "to us" this sounds like an automatic shoo-in for a second term for team Obama, we must take nothing for granted! We must become all the more active in the next 90 days!!!

Ryan as VP Choice

This who the one I hoped MittWit would choose. He is radical, his budget is radical, he is totally anti women! He is anti seniors and the only saving grace he has is he is articulate, unlike Romney! But, I do not think this will help Romney in any way. This guy is way way way off the rails. The press calls the choice a Hail Mary for Romney. It will not work!

RYAN & ROMNEY: UNFIT FOR PUBLIC OFFICE!!!

NEITHER ROMNEY NOR RYAN HAVE ANY CONCEPT OF WHAT AVERAGE PEOPLE HAVE TO DEAL WITH IN THEIR LIVES!!! ROMNEY CAN'T RELATE AND DOESN'T WANT TOO!!! RYAN HAS BEEN ON THE PUBLIC DOLE (PAYOLA) FOR SO LONG HE HAS NO CONCEPT OF WHAT HIS CONSTITUENTS HAVE TO AND ARE DEALING WITH!!! 99% TAX ON ALL 1%!!! IT'S ALL UNEARNED INCOME!!! ENTITLEMENTS ARE MORE IMPORTANT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO PRESERVE OUR NATION!! NO ENTITLEMENTS: WELCOME TO CHARLES DICKENS 1890'S LONDON!!! 2 CLASSES IN SOCIETY: THE ROYALTY AND RICH! THEN EVERYBODY ELSE: WITH NOTHING!!!

paul ryan

Google "woman up" pavilion at republican convention sponsored by Eric cantor They are going to tell women how conservative policies are good for them and their families. Poppycock!

Paul Ryan, Romney's VP choice

Paul Ryan is a logical choice for Romney, considering their history, both of their current points of view and obvious PERSONAL agendas for this country. With that being said, I'm glad for the Ryan choice. It's just another confirmation in my eyes that Romney would make a DISASTROUS President for everyone except his corporate "friends". I hope and pray that voters who "make the Republican voter registration manipulation and suppressions" CUTS will finally WAKE UP,

Romney + Ryan = screwed middle class

Romney selected Ryan in large part to bolster support from the GOP's conservative base, but also for his alleged fiscal savvy, as Mr. Ryan is regarded as the architect of the GOP's master budget plan. So let's take a look at their shared economic philosophy: Fiscal conservatives such as Romney and Ryan are primarily interested in two outcomes: 1) Increasing the income divide between the wealthiest Americans and the rest of society 2) Increasing profit margins for corporations via lowered taxes and minimized environmental and workplace regulations Reducing unemployment is a secondary issue -- if said corporations opt to use their increased profits to hire additional employees, that's their prerogative. Alas, historical evidence overwhelming demonstrates that increased corporate profits do not translate into increased hiring -- increased demand for goods and services does. And, of course, increased demand requires increased purchasing power by that subset of society which does the majority of the purchasing, i.e., the middle class. And yet the budget plan championed by Romney and Ryan is designed to shift the federal tax burden further away from the ultra-wealthy toward the middle class. Go figure. Furthermore, virtually every nonpartisan economist has confirmed that the Romney/Ryan budget plan contains impossible to attain, mutually-exclusive goals -- cutting taxes on corporations and upper class Americans while simultaneously reducing the federal deficit. Must be the new math! In addition, Ryan and his fellow health insurance lobby lackeys in the Republican Party have taken a "General MacArthur" approach to destroying our nation's Medicare system. His plan will not make it immediately die -- he simply wants it to slowly fade away. … and with it the ability of future senior citizens to obtain affordable chronic condition treatment and preventative health care. And just to top it off, Ryan supports the privatization of Social Security so that Americans would be forced to play Russian Roulette with their retirement savings. By selecting Ryan as his running mate, Romney has embraced the notion that the ultra-wealthy 1%er tail wags the GOP dog ... and the middle class should get stuck with cleaning up the lawn.

Romney/Ryan ticket

I keep getting updates of Romney...I am in my seventies...I have seen it all...and no matter whom he chose...I would be voting for Obama/Biden....I know..and watch the congressional meetings...and senate...I know exactly how republicans feel about the middle income and poor...they care not...and they have no reason too, unless they have a concience. We provide the best of health care for them...they a making a fortune that we also pay....and get to vote in their own raises....It 's like anarchy..whatever that is! Obama/Biden are the only way to go, if you want to keep social security and medicare.....we are not on medicaid...and I am loud about it....you've got me.....Mr. President!!!! Shirlee Kittrell

Ryan pick

I'm laughing because the choice of Ryan is such a win for the Obama campaign. Then suddenly I am crying because the choice of Ryan is such a win for the Obama campaign and the people of this country. Ryan stands for all the obstruction we've experienced in Congress over the past two years, all the attacks on women, minorities, children,Medicare and Medicaid. And oh goodness how fortunate we will be not to have him there leading the parade of naysayers. This is the moment of real change we've been praying for!

Incest

I don't think many people, especially republicans, realize just how many teenage women are raped by their own fathers, or step fathers, or other male family members. When a pregnancy occurs out of a situation such as this, should the teenage girl be forced to have the child which will be an incest baby, likely to have health problems? Or what about any woman who's pregnancy came from a rape for that matter? Seriously. And in some states teenagers have to get permission from their parents to get an abortion, when in many cases it was a parent that raped her. Wow.
