Top 5 Worst Things About Paul Ryan's Record

It’s a big day in presidential politics. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has chosen Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate. The Vice President pick says a lot about a nominee’s legislative priorities, and with Ryan joining Romney on the ticket, we think there are a few things you should know.

1. Paul Ryan authored budget proposals that would end Medicare as we know it. His budget proposal would repeal health care reform, sticking seniors with the bill and leaving their health care at risk. This is especially problematic for women, who make up fifty-six percent of Medicare beneficiaries.

2. Paul Ryan’s budget plan would have cut SNAP grants by 18%. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) grants, also known as food stamps, has kept 3.9 million Americans (equivalent to the entire population of Oregon), including 1.7 million children, out of poverty, and allowed them to keep their families from going hungry. This plan also would have drastically cut jobs, leaving 174,000 people out of work.

3. Paul Ryan is bad for women. He voted for a bill that would have effectively banned abortion coverage by insurers who received federal or taxpayer funding. This bill, which Ryan favored, would have allowed anyone involved to refuse to perform an abortion for any reason, even if the life of the woman needing the abortion was in danger.

4. Paul Ryan is extremely anti-choice. Paul Ryan voted for the Protect Life Act, which grants hospitals far-reaching powers to deny women abortion care, without any exception for emergency situations. US law currently requires hospitals receiving federal funds to provide emergency care to anyone in need up to the point at which they can be stabilized or transferred, if the original hospital is incapable of providing the care they need. "The misnamed Protect Life Act is about allowing women to die if they need an emergency abortion," said Meghan Rhoad, women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. "It is a vicious attack on women’s rights and on the most basic right to life.’”

5. Paul Ryan wants to defund Planned Parenthood. This ideological attack would only result in more women losing access to necessary and basic health care. One in five American women have used Planned Parenthood health services.

There you have it. While Mitt Romney parades Paul Ryan around as his pick to be first in the line of succession to the presidency, you now have the facts. Paul Ryan has a long history of voting against affordable health care and women’s health. His legislative priorities leave millions of people at risk of losing their health care and in medical and financial danger. Combined with Mitt Romney’s bad policies, it’s clear: the Romney/Ryan ticket is bad for women and families.

If we want to re-elect President Obama and elect the women who can hold Romney, Ryan, and the rest of the far right accountable, we need you with us. We've got a long fight ahead, but I know that there's no stronger barricade in the War on Women than the EMILY's List community. Click here to contribute to help our women win in November.

Romney-Ryan

Oh dear god! Another one on the ticket that hates women! He is as bad as Romney who only loves the rich! They make me shudder to think what will happen to the poor and what used to be our middle class. Our president is not perfect but u bet I'll be voting for him! At least he cares enough to try to make this country better!!!

Ryan's dream

Republicans have always dreamed of ending Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. In addition, Ryan hopes to eliminate education programs like Head Start (preschool for poor children). Republicans always argued that family and charities should care for the elderly and the poor. So, If it is to Romney & Ryan, bring back the long soup lines of the 1930's while Romney accumulates more tax free millions in Switzerland, Bahamas and the Caymans!

The Romney-Ryan twins

There is no chance these two idiots can get elected.....unless we drop the ball. Don't give up!!

SNAP and Womens Rights

So this guy hates abotion... it sounds like he hates women as well if he would rather them die than terminate a pregnancy that is killing them. I get that and its ugly. I wouldn't vote for this guy... but let me say something about your statements about SNAP. I am familiar with SNAP. They do NOT keep people out of poverty. That is a misstatement. You have to be well below poverty to get Food stamps. That means... you still probably can't afford to pay all of your bills (or rent) but at least you can eat. People in the SNAP program are still in poverty and the program does nothing to change this. Just to be factual about the program... People would starve without it... but it does not keep people out of poverty.

oops

I can't believe they left out the absolute worst thing about his record: his budget proposal will add more than five TRILLION dollars to the deficit! Only idiots vote Republicon anymore.

Theme Song

The unofficial, but utterly appropriate, song for the Ryan-Romney campaign: "Kill The Poor," by the Dead Kennedys.

mitt and paul equal I got mine to heck with you

How pathetic that mitt and paul are on any ticket....shame shame...their philosophies amount to an unequivocal "I've got mine, the H--L with you. It is sad that we live in a country that has so little care and compassion for one another and SHAME on both these boys...that's right boys...because real men would not leave people struggling which is exactly what mitt and paul will do. I am embarrassed to say I am of the same species...Oh Wait! these boys do not deserve to be called human beings, because a real human being would not be so cold, callous and cruel. If you are wondering why mitt appears to be so unapproachable, it is because he has a heart of stone..or maybe he doesn't have one at all. Let's also remember, he is lying and hiding his tax records because his off shore accounts would really make jaws drop!

Two R's, don' make a right,

Two R's, don' make a right, they make a FAR right. Women, seniors, children, and persons with preexisting conditions will suffer. We need a civil war to divide the Dems and the Reps, then we will see how many of the women, seniors and poor will find their religion will not pay the bills and take care of the sick.

Ryan for VP

This is good news for Democrats! Nothing could make clearer the stark choice in the Presidential race. Now maybe we will get a discussion of substantial issues that will engage the full attention of voters. I can't believe most voters really want the economic policies promised by Ryan/Romney.

VP Ryan

I believe that history says 14 Vice-Presidents have become Presidents. Ryan as President of the USA? Sheesh! The very process by which a presidential candidate is given the responsibility for picking his "running mate" means that the percentages that his pick will follow him in the White House are too great for the system to endure, let alone be entrenched. Ryan, like many of his cohorts, is often wrong, but he is never in doubt. Self-assurance is no indicator of future successful leadership. i
