Top 5 Worst Things About Paul Ryan's Record

It’s a big day in presidential politics. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has chosen Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate. The Vice President pick says a lot about a nominee’s legislative priorities, and with Ryan joining Romney on the ticket, we think there are a few things you should know.

1. Paul Ryan authored budget proposals that would end Medicare as we know it. His budget proposal would repeal health care reform, sticking seniors with the bill and leaving their health care at risk. This is especially problematic for women, who make up fifty-six percent of Medicare beneficiaries.

2. Paul Ryan’s budget plan would have cut SNAP grants by 18%. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) grants, also known as food stamps, has kept 3.9 million Americans (equivalent to the entire population of Oregon), including 1.7 million children, out of poverty, and allowed them to keep their families from going hungry. This plan also would have drastically cut jobs, leaving 174,000 people out of work.

3. Paul Ryan is bad for women. He voted for a bill that would have effectively banned abortion coverage by insurers who received federal or taxpayer funding. This bill, which Ryan favored, would have allowed anyone involved to refuse to perform an abortion for any reason, even if the life of the woman needing the abortion was in danger.

4. Paul Ryan is extremely anti-choice. Paul Ryan voted for the Protect Life Act, which grants hospitals far-reaching powers to deny women abortion care, without any exception for emergency situations. US law currently requires hospitals receiving federal funds to provide emergency care to anyone in need up to the point at which they can be stabilized or transferred, if the original hospital is incapable of providing the care they need. "The misnamed Protect Life Act is about allowing women to die if they need an emergency abortion," said Meghan Rhoad, women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. "It is a vicious attack on women’s rights and on the most basic right to life.’”

5. Paul Ryan wants to defund Planned Parenthood. This ideological attack would only result in more women losing access to necessary and basic health care. One in five American women have used Planned Parenthood health services.

There you have it. While Mitt Romney parades Paul Ryan around as his pick to be first in the line of succession to the presidency, you now have the facts. Paul Ryan has a long history of voting against affordable health care and women’s health. His legislative priorities leave millions of people at risk of losing their health care and in medical and financial danger. Combined with Mitt Romney’s bad policies, it’s clear: the Romney/Ryan ticket is bad for women and families.

If we want to re-elect President Obama and elect the women who can hold Romney, Ryan, and the rest of the far right accountable, we need you with us. We've got a long fight ahead, but I know that there's no stronger barricade in the War on Women than the EMILY's List community. Click here to contribute to help our women win in November.

He Who Self Destructs!!

You are so right! The idiot slit his own throat. And why? So he can admire himself in his new mirror image. Stay loud! Pass it on!

He who self destructs!!!

I share the same trepidation as you "senior woman" - from the very beginning of Ryan's bursting on the national landscape I've felt this nervous tremor within that I get when I can barely contain myself - this persona's grinning joker flash of in-your-face display of pure audacity spew's BANE / BAIN / of the destructing arm to our society - to our cultural values ... ROMNEY / RYAN is their own destruct mechanism we were hoping for !!! Take heart Dear Lady ~ the American people will do right by you !

You got that right, senior

You got that right, senior sister!

Be afraid, be very afraid!

As much as we progressives scoff at a Romney/Ryan ticket, it would be dangerous to underestimate the effect of this nomination on the far right. Just look at what it's going to do to the rock-ribbed tea-bagger base: They have a chance to put their "dream team" in the White House, anti women, anti gays, anti seniors, anti health care, anti social security, anti unions, anti-immigration, anti-separation-of-church-and-state ... and these folks are motivated, mobilized and manic! Their effect will reduce any advantage we have in regions of thoughtful enlightened voters. They can win! If we don't get emotional, involved, active -- if we don't get scared. So don't just sit around and talk about politics; don't just chortle with your neighbors about how foolish the far right can be. Join your local Dems! Volunteer! Get on the phones! Get in your car and meet people! Host events! Send money to local and national candidates! Participate in the defense of the homeland from the barbarians at the gate! Remember the lesson of Germany in the late twenties and early thirties: the progressives and so-called intelligencia scoffed at the National Socialists as a silly bunch of twisted boy scouts who would be useful in getting rid of the Communists. Well those ridiculous boy scouts had enslaved all of Europe in another ten years! Oh yes, friends, be afraid! Be very afraid!

Mittens and Paul bunyan

You've got that right and I agree with you 100%. Anyone who believes these savages are representing their needs deserves to be hoodwinked. Support President Obama and VP Biden.

Damien

So Romney decided on Damien for his VP. Check out the widow's peak and features. Someone please check under his hair for the dreaded 666.

So Romney decided on Damien for his VP

Ever since I see this kid on TV on the congress floor , I said this kid Ryan look so much like Damien because he look like the Adam's Family kid with Widow's peak on his forhead and he sure look like skinny franklin stiene .. So we have something in common on Paul Ryan .Look out they both are just as bad for majority of American .

It seems that the destruction

It seems that the destruction for seniors began long ago when only Attorneys were allowed to be educated and the US prohibited more Physicians years ago. Before 911, to become a photo journalist colleges just stopped offering the classes, after 911 resumed. Well planned.

Paul Ryan

Good! I'm glad he's not a watered-down progressive. It doesn't matter anyway. Progressives like the people who run this site would have criticized Romney's running mate no matter who he picked. Oh, and it should be noted that SNAP and Obamacare do nothing for the middle class except steal from them to pay for the welfare lowlifes' expenses. The "War on Women" is nothing but the next in a long line of similar occurrences when liberals sensed a chance they may not get their way. When liberals don't get their way, they call it discrimination, prejudice or bigotry. It's so predictable, and the rest of us are sick and tired of hearing it.

Ticket for All - NOT!

Ticket: poor/bad choice for women, unborn babies, communities, history. For those babies that are born - some will be women who may/will later give birth to both males and females. Proper and affordable health care, nutrition and choice alternatives are important, especially for women. Most older women will continue to need - health and dental care, Medicare, Social Security, nutrition, assistance. What were they thinking? Where is their awareness of what women want or need? I don't believe that this ticket really acknowleges, knows, connects, cares/feels for women in a receptive comprehended personal way. By voicing our focused concerns, consequences and truths about these horrific injustices about this challenging and difficult ticket and not voting for this ticket, we nudge them back to reality and not into office...........
