Top 5 Worst Things About Paul Ryan's Record

It’s a big day in presidential politics. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has chosen Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate. The Vice President pick says a lot about a nominee’s legislative priorities, and with Ryan joining Romney on the ticket, we think there are a few things you should know.

1. Paul Ryan authored budget proposals that would end Medicare as we know it. His budget proposal would repeal health care reform, sticking seniors with the bill and leaving their health care at risk. This is especially problematic for women, who make up fifty-six percent of Medicare beneficiaries.

2. Paul Ryan’s budget plan would have cut SNAP grants by 18%. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) grants, also known as food stamps, has kept 3.9 million Americans (equivalent to the entire population of Oregon), including 1.7 million children, out of poverty, and allowed them to keep their families from going hungry. This plan also would have drastically cut jobs, leaving 174,000 people out of work.

3. Paul Ryan is bad for women. He voted for a bill that would have effectively banned abortion coverage by insurers who received federal or taxpayer funding. This bill, which Ryan favored, would have allowed anyone involved to refuse to perform an abortion for any reason, even if the life of the woman needing the abortion was in danger.

4. Paul Ryan is extremely anti-choice. Paul Ryan voted for the Protect Life Act, which grants hospitals far-reaching powers to deny women abortion care, without any exception for emergency situations. US law currently requires hospitals receiving federal funds to provide emergency care to anyone in need up to the point at which they can be stabilized or transferred, if the original hospital is incapable of providing the care they need. "The misnamed Protect Life Act is about allowing women to die if they need an emergency abortion," said Meghan Rhoad, women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. "It is a vicious attack on women’s rights and on the most basic right to life.’”

5. Paul Ryan wants to defund Planned Parenthood. This ideological attack would only result in more women losing access to necessary and basic health care. One in five American women have used Planned Parenthood health services.

There you have it. While Mitt Romney parades Paul Ryan around as his pick to be first in the line of succession to the presidency, you now have the facts. Paul Ryan has a long history of voting against affordable health care and women’s health. His legislative priorities leave millions of people at risk of losing their health care and in medical and financial danger. Combined with Mitt Romney’s bad policies, it’s clear: the Romney/Ryan ticket is bad for women and families.

If we want to re-elect President Obama and elect the women who can hold Romney, Ryan, and the rest of the far right accountable, we need you with us. We've got a long fight ahead, but I know that there's no stronger barricade in the War on Women than the EMILY's List community. Click here to contribute to help our women win in November.

Living in Fear!

I fear for our country if these Bozos are voted in. I fear for my daughter's future and her right to choose what happens to her own body. I fear for my son's future health if Obamacare is repealed, since his pre-existing conditions will prevent him from ever getting insurance. I fear for our already tenuous financial situation if Medicaid is taken away, because of a 5-year-old son with medical problems bigger than most Americans could afford. Wake up, America, and vote sanely in November! I don't want to live in fear the next 4 years!

Hooray for this Ryan choice!!!!

Mitt makes it easy to be defeated with this #$@!!! choice of Ryan as a running mate. Hopefully, blue collar Republicans (which is an oxymoron) will wake up, but this will not be easy to accomplish. We need to spell it out clearly to everyone: This is how these Mitt/Ryan changes would affect you personally. Hopefully, somebody out there is doing exactly that. I look forward to conversations with my born-again conservative neighbors, all of whom are on Social Security and Medicare. It should be interesting.

Paul Ryan for VP

Paul Ryan is the right choice for Romney to engage social and economic conservatives. What liberals and progressives refuse to acknowledge is that if you take all the top 1% has to offer... right now... it will only run the government for eight days. And then what do you do? If we want Medicare as it is, we ALL need to pay more for it. If we want Social Security as it is, we ALL need to pay more for it. Obama's support for reducing contributions by 2% for the past two years was antithetical to what he says he wants, a strong, continuing Social Security program. I live in Illinois, with the worst public pension funding in the nation, and what did my legislators (Democratic majority) do? Immediately raise the state income tax by 2%, taking every penny that families were supposed to get from the lesser payout to Social Security. AND IT DIDN'T HELP ILLINOIS!! Vendors to the state are STILL waiting months, even over a year, to get paid for services rendered. Our state gredit rating is going down the toilet because we can't pay our bills. THAT"S THE DIRECTION OUR COUNTRY IS GOING IF ALL OF US WHO CAN DON"T PAY OUR WAY. The truly disabled cannot, so we carry them. But everyone else, study, work hard, and be happy to live free. More stuff is NOT where true, lasting happiness will be found.

The Democrats should flood

The Democrats should flood the air ways with this information. The American people must be warned to get out and vote or suffer the wrath of Ryan!

Romney/Ryan ticket

They belong in the 9th circle of Dante's "Inferno". I'm being polite!

Please

Must you engage in hysterics? How can we have a substantive discussion on the facts and issues if both sides use this sort of vitriol? There is no doubt there is a problem. The non-partisian Congeressional Budget Office says there is simply not enough tax revenue to fully support entitlements in their present construct. You can tax and demonize the rich, but in the end, medicare, planned parenthoon, and other programs are still going bankrupt. Increasing the marginal tax rate on the wealthy is like using a thimble to bail out the Titanic. I have children that will inherit the debt. What is your suggestion for a compromise?

He who self destructs!!

As a senior woman, I am doubly frightened by the combination of Ryan and Romney. However I feel that one of the other posters has it right--Romney just slit his own throat. Ryan's arrogance and in- your- face hostility toward women and their issues as well as his attitutude toward the welfare of seniors sets him up for a little splash in the big pond. I do not care how much money the Kochs throw at this they will not be able to douse the ire of women and seniors. And they are going to be out in full throat and vote -just you watch and see!! Mitt has just shown what a politically ignorant fool he really is.

I hope your right. I agree,

I hope your right. I agree, I do not want them running this great country.
