Top 5 Worst Things About Paul Ryan's Record

It’s a big day in presidential politics. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has chosen Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate. The Vice President pick says a lot about a nominee’s legislative priorities, and with Ryan joining Romney on the ticket, we think there are a few things you should know.

1. Paul Ryan authored budget proposals that would end Medicare as we know it. His budget proposal would repeal health care reform, sticking seniors with the bill and leaving their health care at risk. This is especially problematic for women, who make up fifty-six percent of Medicare beneficiaries.

2. Paul Ryan’s budget plan would have cut SNAP grants by 18%. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) grants, also known as food stamps, has kept 3.9 million Americans (equivalent to the entire population of Oregon), including 1.7 million children, out of poverty, and allowed them to keep their families from going hungry. This plan also would have drastically cut jobs, leaving 174,000 people out of work.

3. Paul Ryan is bad for women. He voted for a bill that would have effectively banned abortion coverage by insurers who received federal or taxpayer funding. This bill, which Ryan favored, would have allowed anyone involved to refuse to perform an abortion for any reason, even if the life of the woman needing the abortion was in danger.

4. Paul Ryan is extremely anti-choice. Paul Ryan voted for the Protect Life Act, which grants hospitals far-reaching powers to deny women abortion care, without any exception for emergency situations. US law currently requires hospitals receiving federal funds to provide emergency care to anyone in need up to the point at which they can be stabilized or transferred, if the original hospital is incapable of providing the care they need. "The misnamed Protect Life Act is about allowing women to die if they need an emergency abortion," said Meghan Rhoad, women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. "It is a vicious attack on women’s rights and on the most basic right to life.’”

5. Paul Ryan wants to defund Planned Parenthood. This ideological attack would only result in more women losing access to necessary and basic health care. One in five American women have used Planned Parenthood health services.

There you have it. While Mitt Romney parades Paul Ryan around as his pick to be first in the line of succession to the presidency, you now have the facts. Paul Ryan has a long history of voting against affordable health care and women’s health. His legislative priorities leave millions of people at risk of losing their health care and in medical and financial danger. Combined with Mitt Romney’s bad policies, it’s clear: the Romney/Ryan ticket is bad for women and families.

If we want to re-elect President Obama and elect the women who can hold Romney, Ryan, and the rest of the far right accountable, we need you with us. We've got a long fight ahead, but I know that there's no stronger barricade in the War on Women than the EMILY's List community. Click here to contribute to help our women win in November.

It a shame that most of the individuals on this site have such a narrow view of what is really happening in the county right now. It's the economy stupid.

Romney/Ryan - Not the Problem

The more far nut case the ticket is the more obvious to vote against it, so Ryan does not concern me. What concerns me are the steps being taken to make voting difficult to do or create exclusions in districts where the selection would not be in their favor. The bottom line is we own the accountability. Women, minorities and other disinfranchised outnumber the 1%. Be careful not to focus on the wizard, look behind the curtain.

Love Paul Ryan!!! The

Love Paul Ryan!!! The smartest decision that Romney can make! And as for abortions why do tax payers have to pay for an irresponsible woman's mistake? These women need to take responsibility for their own actions, if they want one they can pay for it out of pocket. I'm disgusted that anyone would want to help idiots pay to kill an unborn child. You idiot need to read more and stop hearing what you want to hear. If you want our national deficit to reduce vote Romney/Ryan!!!

VP Pick Paul Koch Ryan

I have two divergent feelings about Mitten's pick for VP...I shudder when I think of what these two would do to women, children and seniors if elected and on the other hand hope that when more and more information comes out about Paul Ryan's budget and his core values, that it will mobilize dormant Americans to vote in their own self protection. With all of the Republican led voter suppression going on all over the United States, I am fearful that the Koch's (and their ilk) and Republican led State Legislatures will steal this election from the American People. I am 52 years old and have never witnessed anything like these present day politics in my entire life. The Republicans and the teabaggers are in a perennial chest bump over "freedom", but they insist on infringing on the rights of women to have freedom over their own healthcare choices, are attempting to obstruct our freedom to vote, and are supporting a the wrongheaded Citizens United ruling that gives Super Pacs the ability to buy our elected government. Citizens United has essentially rendered the entire concept of "one man, one vote" dead. The scheme is morally indefensible. Why don't Democrats pivot some of these Republican arguments about medicaid fraud and minorities (can you say racist dog whistle?) into a moral argument about the responsibility we have as a nation of good and empathetic people to take care of the poor and needy. We should be proud to help each other, not demonize our brothers and sisters who need foodstamps and medical care for their children when they have hit hard times. It is criminal that "Christian folk" like Paul Ryan want to cut food and medical to the needy (like food and making sure your kids get vaccinated is really an extra in life) and act like these people are trying to get over on tax payers. They are getting foodstamps for God's sake, not a vacation in Monte Carlo. For that matter, I challenge any of these Republicans in Congress who want to further cut these entitlements to try to feed their families for 6 months on a typical foodstamp allocation. Yep,,,,these poor folk are really living the good life on those couple of hundred dollars a month of food stamps for their family of 4 or 5. I read a poll today that said a large majority of Americans don't even know who Paul Ryan is......and that is precisely how these guys get in office....because Americans are getting more ignorant by the day. I pray for our nation. Get informed and vote....our lives and democracy depend on it.

This man is just another

This man is just another Republican pretty face tool! When the people in Janesville heard what his plans were, they started asking Good ?s, he ran away from his "fire side" meeting with his tail between his legs! He is NOTHING I know & LOVE about WI! I'm from MILW. , I live in Cambridge (just outside of Janesville), I think he miss represents the true & proud people of my state!

Pau Ryan

The Romney Ryan ticket is a tragedy for women and the whole country. For senior citizens it would a death sentence yes death when they would not be able to pay for medications or for their care The only hope we haves that enough people in this great. Oungeunof ours wakes up to the danger

no brainer

This vp choice beyond sealed the deal on who my family will vote for. Do i agree with every little thing Obama has done or wants to do, no. However, all that ryan and romney stand for will cause so much harm. Im a single mom who is not working solely because i have a medically disabled infant and rely 100 percent on food stamps to feed my family being my sons disability payments dont even cover all the bills. Barely make it with the little food stamps i do receive....

Romney/Ryan

It should be Rove/Romney/Ryan. Rove continuously says that it doesn't matter who is on the ticket as long as they are able to sign their name. Can you say four more years of Bush's Brain. Terrifying, at least Bush tried to appear compassionate. These two are not as smart and will do whatever Rove wants.

And I love how this fool has

And I love how this fool has the unmitigated gall to call himself a Christian. He's nothing more than a half-decent looking Hitler. Just needs the mustache and you got the same exact guy.

Women unite!

You see what both R & R agree on. "Down with women!" Take females back to the dark ages hih? Not if every voting woman votes against these arrogant *@#(*s ! And make sure those eligible to vote get registered FAST if they are not already able to vote.
