EMILY's List
Blunt running from his own history
By Hilary Nachem on 07/06/2010 @ 11:15 AM
There's a heat wave here in DC, but things seem to really be heating up in the Missouri Senate race.
Robin Carnahan's opponent, Roy Blunt, is a former GOP House Whip currently serving his seventh term in Congress. Working with the Republican establishment for that long, it's easy to see why men like Karl Rove and Newt Gingrich are fighting to help Blunt win this Senate race.
Over the weekend, Blunt's campaign released what will be his first television ad - a short spot that in just about 30 seconds attempts to illustrate Blunt as a family farmer taking on the Washington elite. Quite the mouthful. Blunt has been in politics since 1972. For a man trying to run as the candidate to challenge Washington elite, he's been inside the beltway long enough to be considered a VIP as he sipped champagne during a Georgetown supermarket opening this spring. We've watched as Blunt was a loyal ally to President Bush through the Republican controlled Congress and has joined his party ranks as a consistent "no" vote in more recent history.
Many are speculating that the political atmosphere across America is a dangerous one for Washington insiders and I think some of this talk has reached Blunt's ears. This ad is an attempt to show Blunt as something other than his true form. In the video, he is running from his own history -- he doesn't mention he helped to enact many of the failed Bush era policies, or that he was a member of GOP leadership. He is worried. Why?
Robin Carnahan. Blunt is the kind of Republican that has and always will toe his party's line. Robin is a fifth-generation Missourian whose record of public service as Secretary of State means she'll continue to mount the greatest fight against this GOPer and be an independent voice for the people.
Well, Mr. Blunt -- you may try to run, but you cannot hide your record. EMILY's List members will be standing behind Robin all through this cycle to ensure voters across Missouri know the entire story.
And, in case you were wondering, Robin spent this past holiday weekend hitting the pavement, literally, to meet with voters around the state.
