Senior Writer

Jeanne Duncan

Jeanne Duncan writes, edits, and designs EMILY’s List materials, including newsletters, training manuals, research reports, fundraising proposals, web content, op-eds, and candidate profiles. Hired as the staff writer in 1993, Jeanne has become an integral part of EMILY’s List’s message development team. She specializes in converting dry data into dynamic and compelling prose and lackluster drafts into persuasive copy. She also has an encyclopedic knowledge of obscure style rules.

Raised in Washington, D.C., and Oregon, Jeanne is the youngest of seven children in a die-hard Democratic family. Before joining the staff of EMILY’s List, she canvassed door-to-door for Oregon’s PIRG, wrote for Portland’s alternative weekly newspaper, sold handmade pine furniture, cleaned houses, waited tables, and worked as a freelance proofreader. From May 1991 until November 1992, she was deputy press secretary and direct mail coordinator for the Les AuCoin for U.S. Senate Committee.

Jeanne holds a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia and an M.A. in literature from American University.

1. What blog do you read everyday?

Talking Points Memo, Huffington Post; I also read Salon and Slate every day.

2. How did you end up working at EMILY’s List?

I worked on a U.S. Senate race in Oregon in 1992 that was managed by Mary Beth Cahill. Mary Beth’s next job was for EMILY’s List, and she called me shortly after she started and said, “We need a writer; send me your clips.” Soon after that, I was on a plane from Portland to DC; soon after that, I had an apartment and a cat and a job at EMILY’s List. I’m back in Portland after many years in the DC office, but I’m still working for EMILY’s List.

3. What is your most memorable moment in politics?

Being on the floor of the 1996 Democratic National Convention in Chicago during Vice President Al Gore’s speech.

4. What's the best advice you've ever received?

“Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”

5. Who are the people you most admire?

Ellen, Mary Beth, Karin Johanson, and my late mother.
