Bass leaps forward in CA-33

As the news coverage of yesterday's primaries continues to roll in this morning, there is a reason to raise your coffee mug -- a story we can all celebrate coming out of southern California. In a landslide victory, Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass won the Democratic nomination, edging out 3 male contenders. Bass is now the leading candidate in CA-33, a race to replace retiring EMILY's List Cong. Diane Watson.
But, then again, Karen's victories are nothing new to many of us. In 2004, EMILY's List backed her as a then-rising star running for State Assembly. She went on to become the first Democratic woman to serve as Speaker of the California State Assembly in 2008. In the Assembly, Karen was a champion for better schools and health care reform. Under her leadership, the Assembly worked to jumpstart many projects that are stimulating California's economy and fought hard for budget reform. We are sure that Karen will hit the ground-running when she gets to Congress.
This urban, Los Angeles district is overwhelmingly Democratic which gives Karen a significant advantage this fall as she moves closer to becoming our next pro-choice Democratic woman in Congress. We're all cheering for you, Karen!
