Barbara aces first senatorial debate
By Lisa McIntire on 09/03/2010 @ 12:00 PM
Sen. Barbara Boxer is in the fight of her life, running against former (and failed) HP CEO Carly Fiorina who has a $21 million golden parachute and money from extreme right groups to boot. In their first debate, Barbara was in top form, proving how catastrophic Fiorina would be for California while making her record of accomplishments absolutely clear.
Barbara left no one in doubt of Carly’s far-right and often downright frightening stances, including being in favor of those on the no-fly list being able to purchase guns. Carly confirmed her support of overturning Roe v. Wade (watch the video below) – and Barbara came right back with the implications of such an extreme position: “What the people of California have to understand is that if my opponent's views prevailed, women and doctors would be criminals. They would go to jail, and women would die like they did before Roe v. Wade. So, this isn’t about my opponent’s personal view or my personal view. It’s about the women and the families of our state and of our country.”
Just as telling were the moments when Fiorina seemed unable to take a stance on issues critical to Californians. When asked about November’s ballot measure Proposition 23 – which would overturn the state's landmark clean energy law – all Carly could muster was that she had “not taken a position on it.” Boxer took advantage of this waffling to drive home her point: “If you can't take a stand on Prop. 23, I don't know what you will take a stand on. This is a crucial bill. I’ll tell you the reason why. If we overturn California's clean energy policies, that's going to mean that China takes the lead away from us with solar, that Germany takes the lead away with wind, but I guess my opponent is kind of used to creating jobs in China and other places. I want those jobs created here in America.”
The Sacramento Bee declared that “Boxer finishes stronger in debate,” going on to say that Barbara “hit her stride with an emotional declaration of the differences between” herself and Fiorina.
Game. Set. Match.
