Amy Walters on Mad Men and political women

Trust me -- you don't to miss Amy Walters' National Journal piece from yesterday.
Using AMC's Mad Men as her frame of reference, Walters examines two recent events that, as she put it, "felt more like [Mad Men character] Betty Draper than Betty Friedan." And, having watched those events unfold ourselves, we're starting to think the same thing.
In NY-23's recent special election, GOP candidate DeDe Scozzafava bowed out after high-profile party-members chose to back a more conservative third-party candidate in the race. According to Karl Rove, however, the real reason wasn't a lack of party support; he told Fox News that it was because "[h]er feelings were hurt." Wow. That should send women voters flocking to the GOP.
And, in an issue we've been focusing on recently, Walters writes about the current debate regarding the Stupak/Pitts Amendment -- and how Democratic women have been leading the charge to protect women's rights. In addition to the highlighted women we've helped elect, there was also an EMILY's List shout-out, as well. (And I promise -- I liked the article even before I got to that part.) If there's any question about the importance of electing pro-choice Democratic women to office, then just look at the current debate. Walters writes that "it was striking that on an issue as central to the Democratic party ideology as this one, it was up to women to define and defend it."
