A clear message on financial reform: Expert women getting the job done

When it comes to holding Wall Street accountable and reforming our financial institutions, Americans can rest easier knowing we have smart, earnest women at the helm.

We told you about the piece TIME did on the "New Sheriffs of Wall Street" -- highlighting the female financial experts who are heading up the SEC, the FDIC, and the Troubled Asset Relief Program bank bail-out. Now, we're pleased to report that a number of EMILY's List women will serve in critical congressional roles aimed at strengthening financial regulations.

Notice the pattern we're seeing? Trust talented women leaders who have the expertise -- and the gumption -- to get the job done.

Four EMILY's List women in the House will take part in the conference to bring together the House and Senate legislation on financial overhaul. Freshman Cong. Mary Jo Kilroy (OH-15) will join Congresswomen Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), Nydia Velázquez (NY-12), and Maxine Waters (CA-35). And it's no surprise these women were selected for the task. Maloney currently serves as the first woman to chair the Joint Economic Committee, while Velázquez chairs the House's Small Business Committee and serves with Waters and Kilroy on the Financial Services Committee.

Our women in the House aren't the only ones cracking down on Wall Street. EMILY's List senators are also making their mark. When the Senate's financial regulation bill was passed, it included an amendment from Senator Barbara Boxer that discontinues taxpayer bailouts of Wall Street. No longer will taxpayers foot the bill; now, financial firms will be responsible for the costs of cleaning up their mistakes. Barbara said it all when the bill passed: "Today, we voted to hold Wall Street accountable and stop the reckless practices that brought our economy to the brink of collapse."

Women are uniquely affected by challenging economic times, and there's no doubt it's critical to have women's voices at the table for these discussions.

No wonder we've put our trust in the hands of these savvy women leaders. When it comes to protecting our future and helping Americans get back on their feet, I wouldn't have it any other way.
