The Secret Radicalism of Mitt Romney Part 2

By Sarah Burris on

Before last night’s CNN GOP debate, Romney was interviewed by the Las Vegas Review Journal editorial board. When asked how he would appoint federal judges and U.S. Supreme Court Justices, Romney said he would appoint judges like John Roberts, Samuel Alito, and… Clarence Thomas.

Yes, that’s right. The candidate who would have women voters believe he’s a moderate cites Clarence Thomas as a judicial model.

Describing his backwards-looking view of the judiciary, Romney said: their “job is to apply the Constitution and the Law as it was written and intended. As opposed to using the law and the Constitution as a spring board to uh, uh, execute their own views. I understand that Justices may feel that, uh, laws shouldn’t change, or that new rights should be issued. But it is not their job to do those things. . . So I would prefer to see Justices like Roberts, Alito, and Thomas, and Scalia as the type of appointment I would want to make.”

Ladies, this is not what a moderate looks like.

Just last week, the country reflected on the 20th anniversary of the Anita Hill hearings – hearings that shed a cold light on Justice Thomas’ view of women. Justice Thomas, who has said Roe should be overturned, and who just this year declined to give almost 1.5 million women their day in court in the Wal-mart gender discrimination case.

More of Clarence Thomas? This isn’t the future I want, and I’m pretty sure you don’t either. This isn’t the future I want, and I’m pretty sure you don’t either.
