Congrats to Suzanne Bonamici! OregonLive.com just called the election for the Oregon 1st Congressional District Special Election and it’s Suzanne for the win! We still have an important race in January for the General Election, but right now we’re celebrating another EMILY’s List woman special election victory.
We were among the first to endorse Suzanne for Congress because we knew she would be a champion for working families. After spending her life fighting for the middle class we agreed she’d be an outstanding member of Congress!
That’s why we put our WOMEN VOTE! campaign to work in the district, sending 3 different pieces of mail talking about Suzanne’s accomplishments. We made sure Oregon voters knew that Suzanne took on a shady mortgage company that lied to its customers, crafted new laws to protect families from foreclosure and predatory lending, and led the fight to protect Social Security and veteran’s benefits from garnishment from creditors.
Over 20,000 women were targeted by our WOMEN VOTE! program. Women over age 50 received three different mail pieces detailing Suzanne’s strong leadership. These women made up what we expected would be 40 percent of the primary electorate, but we knew with a strong WOMEN VOTE! Program we would be able to drive up turnout. What we found out tonight was that women were nearly 60% of the primary electorate and women over 50 made up over 46% of the ballots returned. What a great turnout of women voters!
Women, especially older women, were the driving factor in this special election, because WOMEN VOTE! worked hard to make sure they knew Suzanne was the right one for the job. We’re proud of our part in this, but victories are possible when we have great candidates like Suzanne and amazing supporters like the EMILY’s List family behind her.
