In Her Shoes: Spending time with Ann McLane Kuster
By Hilary on 09/02/2010 @ 09:39 AM
Ever wonder what it's really like on the campaign trail? We spent a day with one of our fabulous candidates, Ann McLane Kuster, who is in a tough Congressional primary that's less than two weeks away. We've put together a special album of behind-the-scenes photos from our time on the road with Ann and her campaign.
Meet our advocates

Last week, I wrote about some of the radical and far-right Republican candidates in Arizona and Florida who are already on the attack and taking special interest money. Now it's time to highlight the dedicated and accomplished women whom we are supporting in these races -- Ann Kirkpatrick, Gabby Giffords, Alex Sink and Suzanne Kosmas.
AZ-01
Background: Ann built up impressive accomplishments even before her start in Congress. She was the first woman deputy county attorney in Coconino County. Ann led the charge in Arizona’s House to bring voluntary all-day kindergarten to Arizonans. And she won $46 million in state-funded raises for teachers.
What drives her?
"I want to make sure every Arizonian has access to a decent education, quality health care and the chance for a better life, because I am committed to serving Arizona and changing Washington."
Whose corner is she in?
Simply put: working families of Arizona. Ann is keenly focused on getting the economy back on track and creating jobs for her constituents. She’s working to make sure tax policies benefit those on Main Street, not Wall Street. And she secured passage of a bill to support economic development on Navajo and Hopi tribal land, which made her the first freshman of the 111th Congress whose legislation became law.
AZ-08
Background: Gabby had completed her Fulbright, earned a masters degree, and was serving as the youngest woman ever elected to the state Senate. In Congress, she's fought for entrepreneurs and America's small businesses. Having served as CEO of her family's tire and automotive business, El Campo Tire, Gabby understands the challenges faced by small business owners
What drives her?:
Dedicated to constituent care, Gabby is a serious public servant. She's worked hard to ease the burden of the recession and help struggling families, including investments in renewable energy, providing tax relief to combat troops, and expanding scholarships for math and science education. Gabby puts the needs of her district first.
Whose corner is she in?
As the only Member of Congress with an active military spouse, Gabby is constantly looking to better the lives of our troops. Representing two military bases, she fights to ensure that our troops are properly funded and that our nation is always protected against global security threats.
FL-Gov
Background: Following 26 years of success in the private sector, Alex turned to public service, winning her first-ever campaign to become the state’s chief financial officer. As CFO, Alex has worked to protect consumers, eliminate wasteful spending, crack down on fraud, and restore accountability to government.
What drives her?
Alex believes in protecting the middle class, strengthening the economy, and putting Florida back on track. She has a detailed reform plan to hold government more accountable, restore integrity, and save $700 million by cutting wasteful spending. And she has a business plan to create jobs based on her decades of experience in the business world.
Who's in her corner?
Alex has pulled together a strong Democratic coalition in Florida, including every Democrat in the state's congressional delegation, the Florida AFL-CIO, and unions representing police officers, teachers, sheriffs, and firefighters.
FL-24
Background: With a strong record of public service, Suzanne has advocated for her community in the state House and since her election to Congress in 2008. In her first term, she has worked tirelessly to help families hurt by the recession -- fighting foreclosure and promoting job growth.
What drives her?:
"My interest has always been in serving my community," Kosmas says. "That's why I ran for Congress: to serve the people who live in this district responsibly and with integrity." How to accomplish this? "We must reduce the tax burden on families, eliminate fraud and waste, close corporate loopholes, and balance the federal budget."
Whose corner is she in?
Kosmas works directly with Floridians in her district to address their concerns. Kosmas's constituent service operation has helped seniors, veterans, and other citizens cut through red tape and navigate the federal bureaucracy, including temporary housing for Volusia County residents displaced by flooding.

Hitting the airwaves
By Hilary on 08/31/2010 @ 05:41 PM
From coast to coast, our women’s campaigns are kicking into high gear in anticipation of the quickly approaching November election. We've put together a round-up of some recent messages hitting the airwaves – just a few of the great ads helping show voters what our candidates will accomplish for American families while in Congress.
Cong. Mary Jo Kilroy (OH-15) is fighting for Ohio's working families -- she helped bring reform to Wall Street and protections for consumers.
Ann McLane Kuster (NH-02) is serious about job creation for New Hampshire.
Julie Lassa (WI-07) knows the meaning of "common sense" -- as the daughter of a dairy farmer, she'll bring a fresh approach to Washington, D.C.
Tarryl Clark (MN-06) has been serving central Minnesota for years and always has her community's best interests at heart.

The heat in Arizona
By Hilary on 08/27/2010 @ 05:21 PM
100 degree temperatures aren’t the only reason why Arizona’s been hot lately. The votes are in and our eight Political Opportunity Program (POP) candidates took the primaries by storm!
In a very tight attorney general race, veteran prosecutor and consumer advocate Felecia Rotellini maintained a lead the whole night and came out on top to win the nomination. She’s worked with former Governor Janet Napolitano (another EMILY’s List alum) to crack down on the banking industry and tackle the home mortgage lending crisis by increasing loan officer accountability and improve enforcement.
Former president of the Arizona Education Association, Penny Kotterman, won the hard-fought race for the Democratic Superintendent of Public Instruction nomination with 65% of the vote. Kotterman is a superb candidate for SPI with over 30 years of experience in education. She worked with then Governor Janet Napolitano to put successful education policies in place including AZ Learns and the Arizona school accountability system. She will take on Republican state Senator John Huppenthal in November.
Two native Arizonians beat out Ken Clark in the 15th state House district: former state Senator Lela Alston and political newcomer and social worker Katie Hobbs. Both exceptional women are heavily favored to win in the general election.
EL backed candidates Cheryl Cage of SD-26 and Andrea Dalessandro of LD-30 move on to battles against their ultra-conservative Republican incumbents. If they win, it will be a Democratic pick up in both the Senate and House.
Current legislators Rep. Pat Fleming of LD-25 and Rep. Nancy Young Wright of LD-26 also move forward to face tough reelection battles in November.
These women are joining the ranks of many other Arizona women backed by EMILY’s List, including Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords and Ann Kirkpatrick. Our candidates will work hard to protect the communities of Arizona and ensure the state moves the right direction on critical issues like job creation and education.
They will face tough opposition from Republican candidates and your continued support of these outstanding women is imperative.
Congratulations ladies!
A clear message

I'm loving watching Tarryl Clark as she stands strong with this clever and effective response to Michele Bachmann's mud-slinging.
Earlier this week, Bachmann released an ad attacking Clark's record. It's a real stretch though, considering that in the state House Tarryl has promoted better public education, job creation, and policies that support Minnesota's working families. And as the voters in the video tell us, she's worked to keep "taxes down for 95 percent of working Minnesotans.”
What's the best part of the video? These are real voters of the sixth district speaking, telling us directly what matters to them and just how much the policies made in Washington affect their lives. They're supporting Tarryl because they know that she will work for them in Congress, speak on behalf of their needs, and advocate for them -- not special interests and certainly not tea party bankrollers.
Tarryl Clark is giving voice to real Minnesotans -- just a preview of what she would accomplish in Congress.
